Back to the original question: Why am I an EMT? Why am I STILL an EMT?
I became an EMT because our small rural community needed more EMTs, and I have the "see a problem, fix a problem" mentality. I love taking care of people... my favorite runs are the hand-holding ones. I took the class...
They do make wrist bands that help with motion sickness.
When we got our newest rig I had problems getting used to the "new vehicle" smell and the difference in how it rode down the highway.
I used the bands (which had a pressure point on the inside of the wrist) to help ease my stomach.

Calling 911
I can always tell when preschoolers in the area are introduced to the 911 system...
We get scads of 911 hangup calls from the little darlings. Best Part? Call back and mom or dad swears it wasn't from their phone.
oh yeah, I just randomly pick numbers to call and pretend I'm...
The course isn't expensive, but the equipment can add up quickly. I'm an AHA CPR/First Aid Instructor, but we "rent" our manikins from the local EMS service. I guess I'm lucky in that I don't have to buy all the dvd's and manikins.
The class itself was only 8 hours...
Our volunteer service has been known to have an Open House to celebrate a member's retirement. We serve coffee and cake. We have had a "picture "board" of our service's history...pictures, news stories, etc.
Good luck!
I really can't wait to get started lol. I'm such a dork.
No, you aren't a dork. Perfectly normal.
Have a great time with your ride-a-longs. Just remember to back out
of the way when the patient pukes.
I printed off a copy of the article to pass around to certain people on our service... you know the ones, they speak before putting their brains in gear.
I can't wait for the other parts of the article to come out.
thanks for posting this.

from the dispatch viewpoint
I am a full-time dispatcher for a small county, and run as volunteer EMT-B in my "spare time".
I love my field personnel, and have a way better sense of where you're going than you do. I have maps, gps, and assorted other progams to help ME get YOU where...
obviously a bit after the fact, but...
I'm from rural MN, a bedroom community with a 45 minute drive ONE WAY to the nearest hospital. Here in Mn we can run with a minimum of 2 EMT-B's...
we also have "driver's only" (minimum training is CPR, First AID and CEVO)... which can save our butts...
Intro
Hi, I'm Marti... 911 dispatcher for 18 years, EMT for local volunteer service for 8 years, CPR instructor for 7 years...in southeastern Minnesota.
hmmm, I got started in EMS a little late, went through the class with my daughter the year she turned 18. (beat her national score by a few...
