Why EMS?

Other than you enjoy helping people, Why did you want to get involved in EMS?

For me, I was 11 years old during 9/11. When I was watching it on TV all I wanted to do was help. That stuck with me until I was in College when I chose to get into the College's EMT Program.

Because the firefighter list for FDNY is 41,000 applicants long.
 
My Grandfather was a Firefigher and My Father was a Captain on Rescue back home. He always used to bring me around the department, and I always remember being in awe when the bell would ring for a call as they rushed out and left the station lights and sirens blazing. I spent more time there than anywhere else. So I feel more or less it was in my blood and is my calling in life. Besides the fact I love helping people and the adrenaline rush you get. Now that I'm involved in EMT work, I know I wouldn't be happy doing anything else in the entire world.
 
Because I'm not smart enough to do medicine.
 
My parents were volunteers on the rescue squad since before I was born. I started riding with them on calls when I was 12. They made it official and I was a junior member starting when I was 14.

I don't think I ever really had a choice. I just did it.
 
My parole officer thought it was a good idea.
 
Well my mother is a nurse, my grandmother was a nurse, my grandfather was a nurse in the navy. With all the healthcare people in my family I thought to myself "Gosh, I'd love to be in healthcare and take care of people and blah blah blah, but instead of a nurse I would like to be poor." And now I'm a paramedic :huh:

But actually I just watched a lot of TV and saw people use the paddles to shock people and really wanted to do the same thing. You can imagine my disappointment when I found out we use sticky pads now. One day I will shock somebody with paddles, even if it's just because I finally found a pair and some poor soul just happened to be nearby while I am playing with them.

I'm leaning towards agreeing with Vene on this one.

I hurt myself something wicked playing football in HS. Ended up in the back of an ambo then on the trauma room table. Peaked my interest so I did some ride time in HS and fell in love. I'm going to have to find somewhere to work that wont make me hate my life because I'm still just as hooked as I was the first time they dropped tones on us during my first ride along.
 
It counts towards my mandatory community service hours...per the conditions of my release.

I come from a family in the mediciane field, my dad was a medic and always had medic friends over at the house ( now works as a surgical teachnician)My mom worked as a pharmacy technician and my step mom worked in the lab. I have just been raised in the field and also from a young age liked to help people in need.
 
Nursing school had a long waitlist
 
I wanted to use hero paddles.

I mainly joined because it is interesting and keeps me engaged every day learning something new.

^This. It's always different, always exciting (even the BS calls are entertaining to some degree. That's why it's also a toss up with going into law enforcement.

I have no family in any medical profession whatsoever. Just a lot of M*A*S*H everyday when I came home from school.... everybody was very surprised when I said "Hey, I'm gonna go become an EMT" :P


It kinda just felt right... Can't really explain it
 
It's not an office job, for one. You get to make a difference now and again, you get cool toys and (at least up here!) it pays at least as well as the computer nonsense I'd otherwise be doing. I do not at all mind how much respect I catch once people learn what I do, either.

in 7th grade i saw a girl climbing down a ledge somewhere and slipped and fell a good 10 ft. literally on her face. had noooo clue what to do. there was a cop there and he rolled her over and her face was gone.. plus if the fall didn't kill her, the lack of C-spine precautions might have... so i'm sure that nudged me in this direction

plus i have never been checked out by hot nurse girls before..or any girls for that matter.. until i was in my hot navy blue uniform... ;)
and one time i even got free coffee at a donut shop cause the girl was like "EMTs are awesome!" ...there are perks....

I like helping people, i'm good at helping people.

also my sister tried killing herself and the EMTs that showed up were really great, that kind of sparked the interest, made it more personal.

Also, as a side note, to hell with all of this ricky rescue dissing :censored::censored::censored::censored:. shouldn't people be glad that they have peers interested in their field? Like, headtrips are fine by me as long as you do a good job.
 
I like working a full time job that's only two days a week...
Its usually something different every day.
When I'm not running I'm just hanging out.
It's a challenge that keeps my mind working.
