I am to go into my sons preschool and give a speach about my profession as a Paramedic. My sons preschool is only 3 year olds and is made up of boys and girls and some of whom have learning disabilities or handicaps. For example my son has a speach delay. I am trying to come up with a discussion topic that will also keep the kids active in the discussion and let them learn something about what it is we do and what we are there for. Are there any suggestions out there or any one with expierence in doing this. Thanks all is helpful.

"My Dad Is A..." day huh?

Keep your part very short, maybe bring in your shirt or helmet or stethoscope for someone to try on (you ought to come in partial or full uniform). Let them ask questions. Have some safety handouts or something like that for them to take away (coloring book-like sheets with an ambulance or something on them?).

I actually have done a few of these with our Training officer, but not quite such young kids. It takes practice and there is no easy way.

JUST KEEP IT SIMPLE! Don't go into detail about anything, let them know you are the Whabulance, That you help people when they are sick or hurt, and also, younger kids like that Love to play with stuff. One of the favorites I've found is a simple Stethoscope, just make sure you bring something to clean the ear pieces with.

You can talk about when and how to call 911, what to do if someone's sick, and about what will happen if an ambulance comes...

I also include a bit about how cool carseats are and how they (at 3 and 4 yo) are way too little for boosters, but they are so lucky they get to sit in race car seats anded be safe.

If you can bring an ambulance, Hall the better. Let each kid have a turn in the driver seat, and in the back. Give each one an EKG electrode.

Yeah croft has it right make sure you take lots of stuff for them to handle. Remember at that age they are still very tactile. Definitely go in uniform, the more children are exposed to friendly people in uniforms the easier it will be to treat them if the need ever arises. Maybe go to the dollar store or hallmark and see if you can't buy a couple sheets of fire/ems related stickers to hand out. Most importantly be prepared to be asked a lot of why questions.

Questions like...

Ossifer, are you going to take my daddy away again?".

I'd say full uniform. Definitely a stethoscope for them to play with. Maybe ask a sup if you can borrow a company one so it's not your personal scope? I wouldn't go into much detail just the standard 'don't be afraid' 'we are there to help' type stuff.

If your fire-based the standard turnouts, scba mask and the whole 'if you see someone like this in a fire trust them if your in a fire' type thing.

Like BBG said, at that age they are tactile, let them touch things and play with them.

Im gonna say this is probably a little late, but I remember I liked to be able to go into an ambulance when I was a kid. Visual and tactile stimulation.

We used to have the FD and EMS come to us with their apparatus at school.

I've done 1st-4th grade presentations for my cousin's classes as a Soldier. For me they didn't shy away from some pretty difficult questions, but then came out with ones like "what are your favorite kinds of pants" haha. Just go in there and show them how cool EMS is!

And I agree on bringing as much stuff for them to check out as possible. Mine loved trying on the body armor that weighed as much as they did!

Speach?

Strap the teacher up in a KED and then let the kids play with the stethoscope (A company one), maybe your helmet and tell them you go around in a ambulance saving people (You also have to make siren sounds)

Show them the IO drill and tell them that is what they get if they do drugs and dont eat their veggies.

Tell them you get to hang out with Firefighters too... They will think that is cool!

Sadly this would probably be the most interesting part for them lol
