MCI / Shooting-Bombing in Progress - Live Radio Feed

Cnn reports 12 deaad and 50 injured.

Shooter is in custody. And saying he has explosives in his apartment.

Wow. Youngest was 3 months old.

Keep the guys who responded to this in your thoughts/prayers. Some of them a having a really tough day today. I can't imagine having the phone ring at 1am and going on a shooting in Aurora (which is ridiculously common) and walk in to that disaster.

I'm not very religious, but none the less I'll keep them in my thoughts.

That's got to be hell to walk into. and it doesnt even seem the guy had a motive.

We are ignorant about what this guy was thinking or if he had confederates. Reports on NPR differ as to how many/types weapons he had. Eyewitness reports he entered through a front end (of theater#9) emergency exit, popped gas, then started shooting people trying to escape down the aisle he faced.
Time for us to suck it up and be the "rocks of reason" others will swirl around the next week or so.
Here's hoping the local EMS people/community has not suffered losses and will share their learning with the rest of the world. (Lessons learned at Columbine were used here, no perimeter and no detention of those fleeing the site, intervention as soon as LE boots were in the door.).

Just heartbreaking. I will be praying for all involved.

When I was a cop we practiced this type of incident regularly, though we focused mainly on schools (columbine was still fresh).

I can't imagine what the officers responding must be going through. Mad rush of people, unknown suspects, unknown weapons.

My thoughts and prayers go out to not only the families but also the responders as well.

Just horrible. My heart goes out to the families and crews who had to respond to this.

This is exactly the kinds of scenerios we practiced for in Tactical Medic school.

Sounds like the psycho booby trapped his apartment too. Bomb squad had to evacuate the apartment complex.

News reported that any movement into the apartment would set off the booby traps. PD is backing off until in the morning to review the video and photos.

They report that five buildings have been cleared.

Guy was a former neurobiology student?

Apparently so, but according to Wikipedia (so take it with a grain of salt) he dropped out due to his being academically unsuccessful.

His rats kept jerking out the electrodes and saying "SHEEEET, man..." so he quit.

So maybe now theaters will hire security, get external cameras, armor the lobbies....

Or just lower their prices? :)

I can't imagine what it would be like showing up to something like this as an EMT with so many people killed and injured. It must be chaos? Where do you start? Not to mentioned Ambulances were staging and Police were driving victims themselves to hospital. The biggest MCI i've been to is 3 people lol, not even serious injuries.

It must take a huge toll on the Police, Ambulance and other fire crews. Days, weeks, years after the incident.

While the scene is still not safe call for more resources to the staging area and call the hospital and let them know what's going on. Once the scene is safe start triaging. Set up treatment areas and a "loading zone". Then start treating patients and moving them to the loading zone. Get them loaded and get them out of there.

In this instance LE cars loaded and ran to hospitals. Considering time to set up run and coordinate triage, this may have saved lives initially.

After listening to the initial recording im thinking put multiple units at the theater emergency exit to transport the non-ambulatory. Put a triage in the lobby/front area for the walking injured and to triage the ones outside of the theater itself.

Either way the initial units are gonna be overwhelmed for awhile.
