For those people who work full time in EMS, or if your job puts you on an ambulance once in a while (like 46Young) as a part of your full time job, do you live with your parents, rent your home, or own your own home/have a mortgage that your job helps you pay for?

Not counting students, volunteers, or anyone who doesn't function in EMS full time.

please vote in the poll

I rent a converted dorm room on the campus were I used to go to school. It isn't much, but for $250/month (that includes all utilities plus phone and internet), I'm not complaining.

I rent a duplex with my brother.

It's not that I CAN'T afford a home, but I don't want to be like the idiots that caused us to be in this recession in the first place, living beyond their means. I'm putting 20% down and am not even going to go near the $180,000 home I COULD afford following "traditional" rules.

Nope, my job more than lets me live in my own in a good neighborhood.

I rent an apartment with another medic I work with. It saves us both a little money, but prior to moving in with her in October both of us rented separate apartments in the city with no problems.

I rent a four bedroom house with four other housemates; the leaseholder has turned one of the bedrooms into a bar/games room. It's really nice but damn, it's expensive although I suppose it's close to work so it's a tradeoff I guess.

Most Paramedics own or have a mortgage, at least most of the older traditional ones. For the younger, university graduates like me we just share a place with others and even those who have partners/husbands/wives/families are increasingly staying renting.

I would absolutely love to have my own place but there is no way I can afford it on a measly Paramedic salary and even on a combined income of say $100,000 it would be a struggle; house prices here are just absolutely insanely expensive.

I own a small 3 bedroom home and my fiancé owns as well. We're currently renting her house to a new paramedic in the system. We're contemplating only renting to new medics. It's a known entity. :)

I live with my mom in my "basement bachelor's pad". I do not plan on moving out until I have $5K in savings.

I think I live in an airplane.

How do I get number 4 on the poll though?

I used to make a very comfortable living in my late teens and early 20s working in beverage sales/distribution. I rented my own apartment and lived within by means but when the recession hit and I got laid off, I came back to live with my dad with my tail between my legs. Soon after, my prospective career in EMS began at 24 and now with Paramedic school finals this week, am excited (after clinicals/field/NREMT/Job) to gain independence once again. Although I live in Southern California, it's good to be an optimist. :D

Dude, I'd save a little more than 5K before you get out.

Heck he'll already be old and bald by the time he gets the $5000.

I should have said at least $5K but ideally more.

My new salary will be ~$3k a month but I have no rent and my only monthly payments are my car and student loans which will be ~$600 total. So hopefully it will not take too long to save up some money if I live conservatively.

Own a small condo no mortgage. Lived with my parents off and on from 19 to 25ish then bought first house (with parents help on down payment). Since then I've owned and rented. I'm 39 now and been in my condo for 5 years. Paid cash for it because it was less than most people pay for their cars.

I had right at 40k saved when I moved out. Had I waited it out another year, I could've had 40k more, but I was ready to choke my parents... Lol

I suppose technically I qualify as #4... as my husband makes enough that I don't *have* to work. (Though "Lap of Luxury" isn't quite accurate, unless you consider a modest 4-bedroom house in the suburbs to be luxury... also I like to think that I've earned my keep with 10 years of being stay home mom, housekeeper, cook on-call 24/7/365!)

I desperately WANT to get back into the paid workforce again!
