I'm a little confused. Which step in the process actually makes you a certified EMT-B?

Is it passing the state practical test, the national computerized test or both together?

The answer to your questions is: It depends. Mostly on what state your'e talking about

Kansas

I'm in Kansas. I've taken and passed the practicals at the local community college for the NREMT, and have the national computerized test later this month. Just didn't fully understand the point of the computerized test and if it made a difference or not.

What does your state dept of ems require before they'll certify yoy?

Yes, the written (computer) exam does count. I was similarly confused in December in KS, because the state proctors the practicals, but it's essentially just "coincidence". You passed your practicals - now go pass the written (computer) exam and it'll take about 2-3 weeks for KBEMS to send you your state certificate, and you'll be legal to work in Kansas. You'll also enjoy the NREMT and be able to apply to other states as needed (like MO, if you live/work in the Kansas City area).

If you're further wondering about employment, I would apply now even though you haven't received your certification, nor passed the written. By the time any agency or company gets around to interviews/hiring, you'll likely have passed anyway.

Except most agencies will throw an application in the trash that doesn't have the required certifications...

Depends on if they ask for "proof" of certification during the application process. Some places was a .jpg photo of your cert, some want you to tell them the expiration date, some don't ask at all.

Really? I've never seen an application that didn't ask for proof

Me either...not at a reputable agency. We ask for numbers and expiration dates as well as photocopies.

Also...if you lie about it and that agency figures it out good luck with a job there or anywhere in the immediate area.

That's an integrity issue.

I was called for interviews to three different places without a certificate number to place on the application and was given job offers to two before receiving the certificate. I attached a cover letter to all three to explain, of course.
