Hi Everyone,

I really wanted to get this out, but I wasn't sure where to post this. I'm new (but only posting once).

I'm currently in high school and I've been having a lot of uncontrollable seizures which have required medical attention at least 8 times, so as you can imagine, I've met a lot of paramedics/emts/firefighters. I just wanted to thank all the EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters who devote their lives to helping others. I'm sorry that you guys don't get as much appreciation as you deserve. But, I'm so grateful for the paramedics who once saved my life, and for everyone else too (even those i haven't met).

I wanted to let you know that as a result of all the amazing first responders, I'm inspired to be at least an EMT (and maybe eventually a paramedic or doctor) but I've got to finish high school first.

Anyways, you all are amazing and cool people! I wish you all the best in life, and keep doing the awesome things you do. Don't lose hope when people aren't thankful, because you can be rest assured there is someone out there like me who appreciates everything you do and can't wait until they are old enough (21) to be an EMT.

Sorry for the long post, and I hope this put a smile on your faces!

You're welcome. You can be an EMT at 18, in some states even younger.

Yes, check out your local community colleges' and hospitals' websites for info about their EMT programs. I'm about halfway through the EMT course at Ivy Tech Community College in Indy and the youngest person in my class just turned 19.

You know, if your high school participates in the Post-Secondary enrollment option, you can go to EMR/EMT school now.. You could even start taking college level classes to give you a leg-up. Classes like physiology, human anatomy, basic biology..

You could also contact the ambulance service and see if they offer CPR classes. That way you could get started on your basic lifesaver skills, and get to know some of the people that work there.. Do you have a CPR cert?

I'm sorry about your seizures, my big sister has had epilepsy her whole life. I know how frustrating that can be. I sure hope they can get a handle on it quickly.

2 weeks seizure free today! I'm getting better, so no worries.

As for the EMT training, it is to my understanding that some paramedics don't like/believe that people under 21 should be working as an EMT because they are not as mature as older people. I'm trying to respect that, however I could be wrong.

Thanks for the encouragement! Hope you all have a good day today.

Don't sell yourself short kid. You're still in high school.

Study hard.

Go to med school.

Don't worry about what you may have heard about others' views.

Check with your high school. One of our paramedics teaches a class at a local high school and her students frequently has ride-alongs with us.

Life experience is not equal to chonology.

There are some 18 year olds who have done more than others have in their entire lives.

If you have a goal, do it.

I can speak for the high school classes. I'm 18, not graduated from high school, yet and I have my NREMT.
All in all, there's quite a few high school classes from my understanding. Mine was all of $50 for tuition through my school and $150 for my text book.
Mine was actually at a local community college, where there was students from around 7 or 8 different local high schools.
Check into it :P It was a great experience.

How did you pull that off, it's listed right on the NREMT's entry requirements that you must be 18.

I agree with many on this board, age is a number. While I am not particularly spiritual (at all actually), some have said that there are "old souls" who are wise beyond their years. I got my first stethoscope at 17 when I finished high school knowing I was going to be a nurse. I was an EMT at 18 and working at 19, got my medic at 21. My point is: don't let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do because of your age and some theory about the maturity of people at that age (except buy booze, cigarettes, or rent a car, you actually can't do those until a certain age). You're clearly a bright kid (if for no other reason than you can spell :D ) and you've shown a certain amount of gumption by coming here and posting, follow what you want to do and I have a strong feeling you'll accomplish quite a lot.

Good luck with your seizures, if nothing else you can look at it as good experience for when you eventually have to care for someone with a seizure disorder.

I am 18. I said that, lol. Still in my senior tear, though.

Apparently I get dyslexic when I am tired and am in be car for seven hours, my bad!

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! It feels great to have some reassurance from you all.

Medic lesson #1 - you will encounter far more opinions than facts. Treat them as such.

If you want something worthwhile, if you have a goal, go get it and don't let bull:censored::censored::censored::censored: in any form stand in your way. The only difference between the have's and have-not's in this world is how bad they want to succeed.

Talk to your counselor about the career/tech classes that are available - they probably call it the CTE department. Ask them about the Health Science track and try those courses. We're thinking medical terminology, health science, anatomy. Any public speaking or speech courses can help too.
