Nursing Home 911

I hope I`m not in violation of the rules of the forum. If anyone is interested, check out this site. www.nursinghome911.forummotion.com There`s some interesting items there.

Thanks

My interpretation of the Originator's Introduction is that his intent is to provide a site for people to really talk about that most important (for privates, anyway), unavoidable aspect of EMS; hauling Lizards.

Does that word make you wince? I know the culture. In apology, I helped form it. Last time I used that word here I got reamed! But away from the public eye, I know what and how the talk comes down. I also know that 90% of our disgust is based on "That could be me!" It's all about fear.

So that's why I suggest you check in to that site and help shift the conversation AWAY from the current cultural trend and TOWARD really exploring and embracing an aspect of our job that is truly a service that can make moments beautiful and healing for fellow human beings most in need of them!

I see this as a ground-floor opportunity to help influence the culture and change lives! I now challenge each of you with lots of experience in Code 1's to create one thread that would shine some light on an aspect of that service that your peers could use to make their work more effective.

It's really a subject worth exploring!

Go for it, for all of us.

I personally like the site. It`s entertaining. I especially like the "Gangsta Medics" thread.

Yes, probably in large part because despite working a few years doing IFT, I never fully got the reference?

I worked for commercial ambulance companies for three years, and never heard the term "lizard" until now. I don't know what it means or refers to.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is clueless about it!

Nope, never heard that term either...

I'm actually happy there are so many unfamiliar with the term! It was once almost (U.S.) universal slang for old folks at the advent of EMS, especially in retirement communities where private ambulance firms were just getting their start and 80% of the work was IFT's -- including corpses!

EMS sites are surprisingly politically correct in language, yet, I recognize the same attitudes today as there were back in the 70's when it comes to running everything BUT emergencies. "Lizards" can be lumped in with any other word we use to disparagingly distance ourselves from the pain of our patients, as if that would help us live in health forever. It's about dehumanization; paradoxically, that's something that humans do sometimes.

The OP was alerting us to a different point of view. The Originator of the site (not the OP) is seeking to help change our perception of the value of providing that kind of service. Your perceptions could be valuable there!

We just used GOMER when I worked IFT and when I worked hospital

I didn't know what Lizard meant, but then I read Firetender's book, and now I know. You too can learn what Lizards are for the low low price of $14.99 at Firetender.org!

Edit: I have no idea why I capitalized Lizard, but i'm leaving it like that.
