Major CT health system buys ambulance company and affiliates. What the goal is.

The "why" is always what stumps me. Every part of the medical world complains non-stop that there's no money in medicine - and yet, they keep buying into it more and more. And EMS is a money pit under the best circumstances, so I truly don't know what's actually going on.

there absolutely is money in medicine... there is no money in 911 EMS, or in emergency medicine (and I think Trauma surgery is questionable), but healthcare (in general) can be very profitable, esp for big companies.

One of the reasons hospitals buy ambulance companies is to keep all of the IFT funds internal between the 5 hospitals, as well as all to make money on hospital discharges. in most hospital based systems, the IFT division covers the cost of the 911 division.

I agree with the keeping the IFT money internal, but it also gives the hospital system more control over patient flow across facilities and managed discharges. The faster they can turn over a bed, the more money they can make. Ultimately, even if EMS is not profitable, it can increase profits in other areas of a hopsital by freeing up beds for more admits.
