My civilian job consists of me pushing in carts and stocking job because well high school kids don't like to work nights. Today I came in from being out in below zero temperatures getting carts. I came in stood around by service desk to get warm. I was standing there under the heater when the girl at the desk says very meanly "um you need to find something to do!I responded excuse? the girl working service desk replied again very mean "find something to do all you do I stand around here when you come in." I got my Nremt and was proudly wearing me EMT hoodie. she said when I walked away she smarted off for a 3rd time. Take that hoodie off It offends my boyfriend who is a REAL combat medic. He happens to be working at same store part time doing produce So my questions is do civilians really dislike EMS or what??:glare:

She sounds delusional...

most people don't have such a demeanor.

Does your company have a uniform policy. I presume you work at a grocery store or dept. store I did the same when I was in college. I wasn't allowed to wear anything but the specific items they provided me with.

But she seems a little bit prude, I was also a combat medic, and really all that it is is a NREMT B course, with a add on for military field medicine. Nothing spectacular. Do I find offense in those who have the same certification as me and did not serve in the military.... absolutely not. I didn't see in the EMT course requirements that being a Field Medical Specialist. (Correct job coding for "combat medic") was a prerequisite.

no we don't have a dress policy on the night shift. day does tho

Piss her off - make friends with her boyfriend and, instead of standing at her counter, stand around talking shop with him.

Nope, people are way more friendlier with me while I'm in uniform versus when I am not.

Most people I'd say do not have a dislike for EMS.

That frigid girl sounds like a 'tard considering her boyfriend's military job has zero to do with regular EMS. I wouldn't read too much into her statements. Maybe she's just jealous because her "combat ready" boy toy spends all day or night playing with his bananas and apples instead of being the hero she makes him out to be.

On an aside, I know you're a proud young EMT... However, I would caution you against wearing any official EMT wear when you're not on duty. People could get the wrong idea of what you're doing there, and if there is an incident you are now placed in a position with a duty to act- without any thing but your cell phone. I wouldn't wear any of my paramedic shirts out and about, nor did I as an EMT. That's just my take.

Congratulations on your EMT though. Good luck out there.

Doesn't sound like she dislikes EMTs, just sounds like she doesn't like you.

Advice: find another place to get warm and don't wear an EMT hoodie to work, unless you're working as an EMT.

If find that most people go out of their way for you when you are wearing something that indicates you are a EMT.

How long have you been doing this?

Most people don't even go out of their way to yield to lights and sirens where I work.

What's a civilian job?

Also just don't wear EMS related things in public off duty. Just no need.

It wasn't official dress uniform or any thing. You know what volunteer firefighters where around all the time has there department insignia on it. Like that just EMT.

You must have thin skin to be thinking this deep into it. You know what you do and don't need to prove anything to anybody. Kill her with kindness and let her bask in her own self-pitty.

I had a old woman walk by me once when I was in my military uniform eating lunch and spit in my food and call me a baby killer. I asked her to sit down and join me instead of stooping to her level of hate.

What these guys said as well. 68W "health care specialist" formally known as combat medic, go through a accelerated EMT-B course and then off to 68 whiskey school where they emphasize battle field trauma and desensitize you to gore. Like others said, the training is far from spectacular.

Where ever you go. What ever you do. There will always be people that dislike you or your profession. Just deal with it, let it go, and move on.

Yea, don't be that person.

Thanks guys been a big help! no I don't want to be "that guy" Having thick skin must be the key! On another note tho speaking combat medic. Selective service;say there was a potential draft "we all know that will never happen again use your imaginations" Would EMT's Paramedics. Be drafted? If they where would they be combat medics or higher in medical units?

Generally speaking, if there's a draft and you want to be anything other than an infantryman you'd best beat feet to the recruiting office and volunteer before your number comes up.

True,, very true..

However nothing on me or my vehicle states what I do outside of work. I have EMS shirts and hoodies that were bought for me that can't be used as uniform shirts. But I don't wear them

Its not that I'm not proud of what I do. But I also don't want to be called out in a crowd in a emergency.

And Don't use your EMT swag to get people to go out of their way for you. That's just lame, In Example.

The local convinence store used to give us free coffee when we were on duty as long as we were in uniform along with 20% off of ready to eat hot foods. Which was cool. Most of us would go there for our morning coffee and thank the manager for her generosity. But then we had the select few, that would show up there all times of the day for free coffee an discounts. Hell they even would dress up like they were at work or "going to work" just for the freebies. Needless to say that "courtesy coffee" and discount ended. cause of a select few.

Selective Service..

Its an old system that has just never been removed. Every male is required to do so at 18 years of age.

There is way too many volunteers to worry about a draft, hell they are trying to downsize the military. Why would they want to beef it up? through unwilling participants that were forced to show up?

As far as it used to go, it wasn't what you were capable of doing, you were a number, you don't get to choose you go to the needs of the military. If the military needs infantry men. You go infantry. If the military needs cooks, Get your pots and pans ready, they don't care if you were an accountant before you got drafted if your a able body, YOu get a rifle and a pair of boots.

They'd be placed where the military needs them. Most wouldn't be in a medical role.

That's why I've always said if they start drafting I'm going to enlist so I get a little more power over where I end up.
