For years now we have had problems with the behavior that occurs in the chat room. Every few months the Community Leader team gets together and wonders if removing the chat room would be beneficial to the rest of the site. Each time we discuss it we come to a common conclusion:

"We hate to take away the chat room for those who respect the rules that accompany it."

So recently we came up with one last attempt to keep the chat room alive. Please read the following carefully. This will be your only warning.

If you fail to follow our Community Rules (link), which can be read by clicking on the green 'Community Rules' link at the top of every page, which also covers the chat room, you will be banned from the chat room permanently.

There will be no expiration dates.
There will be no second chances.
There will be no leeway.

Either you follow the rules and are allowed to continue the privilege of using the chat room or you don't. Plain and simple.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I have a strange feeling that the number of people using the chat will soon drop drastically.

We hope not but we're ready to take action if needed.

Certainly don't want to cause any trouble but, don't you think a permanent ban for a first time infraction is a bit harsh?

Nope.

Considering everything we've had to deal with over the past couple of years, including pulling the chat room all together, we're trying everything possible for those that respect the rules.

First of all, we're not opposed to revisiting this policy in a few months and revising it if the conditions warrant it.

That being said, we've tried warnings, infractions, and temporary bans but the problems persist, and quite frankly, we're getting tired of dealing with it. We tried bringing in Chat Hosts, but certain members decided they didn't need to listen to the CH's...we've even had members disregard when a Community Leader tells them to knock it off.

To top it off, problems in the chat room are spilling over to the forum, and problems in the forum are being carried into the chat room.

Gotta love chat and forums. No clue who you are dealing with so it makes some think regular rules of social conduct do not apply. Really is a sad commentary of the world we live in. I'm not talking about blunt honest posts. It's hard sometimes to post anything w/o someone trying to read some sort of wrong tone into my typing, not talking about that. I'm speaking of trying to start fights, name calling, etc. While I don't see the enjoyment of a chat room I know many do enjoy it so for the trouble makers, from a trouble maker;), please let those that want to be there be able to keep their chat.

Hey if they ignore the rules in chat are they also banned from the forums? That might get their attention.

As of right now, no. But they will be on our radar.

well... i havent been chatting as much, but 0 toletance is probably a good thing. the last forum I was on, the admins let soo much racist stuff slide just because they were friends with some of the members. worst part is that my fiancee is black and so (as I should) i stood up for her and I just got ragged on because i did that.

however, i think that there should be a few minor things that institute temp bans. 3 strike rule with certain infractions on neach strike could be good?

Interesting. I am not sure if I am allowed onto the chat. I know the minimum post number has changed a few times. On the other hand, I don't know if I want to ever use it anyway, and not because this thread sheds a somewhat negative light on it, but because I'm very boring and chat would only amplify that.

The chat is normally a great place. I've gotten to know members that chat here very well through the chat, something I wouldn't have been able to do without it. It give you a real-time conversation, something I enjoy.

It's not as bad as the thread makes it sound, stop on by sometime. :)

Thanks for that reply. Having read your posts, I think you're intelligent and amusing, so maybe chat isn't just a bunch of vagabonds and scoundrels. Thanks for the invite!

Having been part of the EMTlife Chatroom for a good while now,I don't know about vagabonds and scoundrels,
but some people can be pretty blunt and just plain rude at times.
That being said, as Hotel said, there are a lot of nice people also!
I, for one, even though I live half way around the world and speak a somewhat different EMS tongue, lol, have made many very good friends in the chatroom.

There are, at times, some very good conversations, re EMS issues, people sharing their knowledge and calls with other members.
I have also meet people who were only looking at becoming EMT's and Medic's, that in the space of joining the chat,
are now through their courses, got jobs and loving their work.
I'm sure there are those that will back me up in saying, that having that online support of those that understand the industry has help as well.
Whether it be on the forum or in the chatroom.

So for those of you that are shy...don't think you have a lot to offer, or are nervous about speaking to a stranger...if you have your post quota, come and say hello.
Looks like those that intend causing issues, and flaunt the site rules, will know longer be able to pose a problem, if they carry on in the manor in which they have been!

Cheers Enjoynz

I just want to say, if it wasn't for the chat room, I probably would have not gotten into EMS. This website got me interested, but the chat is what *kept* me interested long enough to realize how much I liked it :]

So FF and CL's. Because of you guys, I chose a career that I really do love and am happy to go to work every day :)

Hotel used to think like that, he'd sit in the chat and not say a word. But once we got him out of his shell, I think he's realized that he's not so boring after all :P

Yeah Sasha and then you two went onto Second Life...

runnig a website is tough, a chat tougher.
