Just started EMT-B program 3 weeks ago, any input?

I have no advice to give because I'm not starting my EMT class until the fall, but I think it's cool that you have the manikins. I hope we have that when I take the class. Also, you said you have a lot of family members in the medical field, so do any of them know anyone in a pre-hospital...

any info on new NJ EMT-B standards?

Ok, sounds good. Thanks for the info. At the squad I want to join I'd have to do 4 months as a probie anyway so by the time I finish that, I'd be ready for the class that starts in August. Anyway, do you know why they decided to make the course longer? Are they going into more depth or...

any info on new NJ EMT-B standards?

I want to join my local rescue squad and went in the other day to get some info. The Captain told me NJ is moving to a new course for EMT-B's that will be twice as long as the old course. I see this as a good thing, but I can't find any info anywhere as to how the state plans to do this. The...

    Volunteer or Paid ?

I don't think he's aiming to do it as a volunteer forever--just to get experience until he finds a paid position. I'm planning to do the same.

    Time to decide...

I really need to figure this out once and for all because it haunts me. I've been debating taking the EMT-B course for far too long (years). I always find a way to talk myself out of it, mainly because I'm afraid that I'll come across something truly disgusting on a call and won't be able to...

Should I give EMS a go?

No offense, but if you are having problems paying for diapers, you might want to think about practicing some birth control. 2 kids already and you're only 20??? :o Seriously, you need to get your career in order before you start bringing kids into the world without a way to support them...

fear of catching illness from patient

I have no EMS training at this point, but one thing that I have always wondered about is how often do EMS personnel catch an illness from a patient? It's something that has always made me think twice about getting into the field, but then I figure that you must take precautions and maybe I'm...

Paramedic School Textbooks (what was required for you)?

This looks like a great book to add to one's collection. I'm shocked that there is a Kindle edition. They don't usually make Kindle editions out of older, out of print books, so I did a little research and this book is not out of print. New books are still being sold on the publisher's...

    change in career?

That sounds like a good decision. A lot of people will tell you to follow your dreams, but when your dream job only pays $15/hr (or whatever it is in your area) it's just not realistic. And since you are able to do both EMS and your businesses, it seems like a win/win situation for you. Think...

    change in career?

When you say it took a toll on your health, what do you mean? Back problems from lifting, or something else?

    change in career?

First, I just want to say congrats to you for having so much ambition at your age and for being so successful. I know so many people your age who live with mom and dad, no job, no ambition--and it makes me sad for them. You only live once so you may as well make the most of it. I am not in...

College education to supplement being a Paramedic.

My local CC has an AS degree in Emergency Health Science that looks pretty interesting and you can use the credits to transfer to a BS program. Many of the classes are prereqs for RN/PA so it seems worthwhile.

    Evaluating a Volly Service

I'm not in EMS yet, but I volunteer with other organizations and the type of issues you're seeing are pretty typical because they are not being paid and have other stuff going on that probably takes priority. Although I think what you've experienced is a bit extreme. I'd give it another shot...

    Meeting at the volly...........

Don't know how much experience you'll get, but at least it'll be entertaining, lol.

    Meeting at the volly...........

Sounds like quite a cast of characters. If you stick with this group, it seems you should hang with the guy with the mom who is a teacher. Sounds like he's the only normal one there. Either that or find another volly service in your area and see what they're like. I don't understand why the...

    Medical Reserve Corps?

I don't get the impression there is much of a need for EMTs, but ask the guy you e-mailed what he knows about it. It varies by area.

    Medical Reserve Corps?

I briefly looked into CAP, but around here they are more for teenagers. Plus, I'm not into flying. I'm more of a seafaring type, lol. And, the CG AUX works more closely with the CG than CAP does with the USAF--and that appealed to me. But the guy is right. You should go to a meeting...

    Medical Reserve Corps?

Check out the link I posted earlier in this thread for more info. Just realize it is a volunteer organization so you wouldn't be paid.

    Medical Reserve Corps?

CAP=Civil Air Patrol I don't know much about them personally, but I've heard they're a good organization.

    Medical Reserve Corps?

I know, I just meant that if the CGAUX isn't an option for him, then maybe he could look into CAP.
