I think it's a good idea for an agency that has a high call volume, or a bigger department. For the smaller ones, I think there's more beneficial things to waste money on. The way I see it, who in the squad will actually use it besides a select few? Unless you're pulling duty, the people who...
I mean, staying on topic, the under-armour does sport a nice line of breathable apparel, but the whole off-duty thing has me wondering. If you can't hang around town in something comfortable or daily clothes, what's next?
You're referring to off duty personnel here correct? If you don't mind me asking, how would one tell that you belong to your rescue organization without walking around advertising it? Seems a bit much
For my ring, I use Starlight by Muse, for text I use a default blackberry tone. I use different blackberry tone for all the other crap my phone does, ie: email, blackberry messenger, etc...
That's why you don't rely on the stretcher catching, always think it's going to miss.
For some reason our older rig has the safety latch, but when we ordered our new one they decided it wasn't necessary. So if you're not focusing on that fact, it's always a nice surprise.
It could be an idea, if anything you'll have some fun out of it. I'm sure afterwards, you'll get a few new members. Do a christmas fund-drive type of deal, or some sort of christmas party type of deal for donations.
Do you guys promote at all or have any type of events to let the "public" know who you are? Or on that motion, do you guys go to town / county events as an organization?

I see what you're getting at. I suppose in the daytime hours if dispatch just called your unit number and what not, it wouldn't be a problem. Night time could be a problem though. I think ultimately, the tones are to just grab attention so you can listen in and see if you're being called out, or...
As of now we share our frequency with the PD. If we leave a radio open vs. only announce when tones drop, we'll hear everything going on. If it's set to tones only, we won't hear anything until we get the alert of a call. This is possibly changing in the near future though where instead of our...
Depending on your state and department guidelines, it can be legal to install an emergency warning light, and in some places, a siren.
As for being recommended or needed? Not at all. Half the time it isn't needed on the ambulance. This will probably be the nicest response to the question.
