In my opinion, the only reason they should be fired is for doing this :censored::censored::censored::censored: in uniform, on the ambulance, while on call. the substance doesn't matter to me, you wouldn't pick up alcohol while on call.
at my company our "boss/supervisor/owner" wants us to treat all chest pain as stable, his reasoning; "i have chest pain three times a week and i never go to the hospital"
we ignore him and still treat all chest pain as a possible MI
all of my partners smoke, I do not. If they need a smoke, I make them do it outside. My lungs don't have to tolerate their carcinogenic inhalation habits...
my company uses pole stretchers, i actually like them, sort of. i just wish they would upgrade to a rubberized canvas instead of... regular canvas... and wooden poles...
i avoid the nrb unless the pt looks cyanotic or is obviously in resp distress ( even them i ask if they want it, sometimes they get claustophobic and tear it off). A pt with an hx of copd or chf will probably only require a few lpm. and if a pt has low spo2 levels i'd still start them off low. a...

I've been accused of dropping a Pt before... we were interveiwed by the company's lawyer. haven't heard anything in over a year. I'm not worried, considering that I didn't drop the Pt.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear that despite washing of hands and wearing PPE that quite a few health workers contract various diseases, but just carry it rather than showing symptoms.
