I've been a paramedic for a 2 years, basic for 1, and I still double check myself. I know people who have been paramedics for 20+ years who still get nervous and double check themselves, its a good thing. That nervousness keeps you from making stupid mistakes, it is a good thing all in all.
I get to be outside, always moving, and there aren't too many dull moments. I hate being bored, and this job pretty much guarantees minimal boredom. It makes you use your brain a lot, and I get to help my community in it's people's times of need.

My usual carry is a nickel plated Kel Tec Pf9, but depending on the clothing/time of year I carry a Glock 26, or a snub nose Ruger .38 in my boot.

I'm lucky enough that my partner has become my mentor. He has 30 years experience in EMS and is widely reguarded as one of the best medics in our company. He also doesn't mind teaching me things when I ask.
Don't know about the pay rates but you would probably have to work nights, part-time, or PRN to go to a community college program and work at the same time.
If the accident is bad enough to need an ICE number we usually won't be wasting time looking for cell phones. Unless they are in the patients pocket and remain there all the way to the hospital, the PD or SO will probably be the ones using them.
