So I am filing my taxes for california right now, and there's a box for work-related item credits. I was recently certified and now working as an emt, and I hear a rumor that you can claim your cert fees and livescans on your tax forms. Does anyone know if this is true?

I know there is that American Opportunity credit for education write offs, someone posted here on the forum, and I am getting a pretty good amount back because of it, not sure about license fees though... I think it is only for tuition.

Anyone know more than I do on the subject? It's an interesting question.

Work related expenses can be written off, but unless it's some ungodly high amount (I think in the 2500 range) you're better off just filling out the EZ form. at least that's what I was told by a tax preparer a few years back.

Yea Im using the American Opportunity Credit for my books because I get a fee waiver for tuition :P But Im doing them myself online, and I figured any amount will help out. Thanks for the input :)

I heard that the ez form is no longer. Really interested to see this years tax return

The license fee and livescan stuff probably isn't effectively deductible because it's not likely to exceed 2% of your AGI. It may be a good idea to check whether or not those fees also fit within the American Opportunity program... If they do, include them. If not... they'd be on that 2% AGI deal...
