Scanner Question

Am I able to be 'toned' out on this since I will be a Volly???

What kind of radio did u list the specs for? Make, model? Some radios do have the ability to be toned out.

Why not just have the pager or radio that the department gives you? If they can't provide you with the equipment you need, you probably should not get involved with them. It's like dating someone too cheap to buy condoms....you're just asking for trouble by getting into bed with them.

There's a way to get a free one. Let your dept you wanna volly with issue one

What he said.

I have no effing clue as to what these all means....can someone please translate. Is it a scanner AND a radio?? Is that legal?

I know that if the department does not supply a pager or a radio, I should move on. I was just simply asking if this had a tone setting..its not a requirement..I literally do not know what this stuff means and I was asking for clarification. Although, one of the places I went to volunteer did say I had to get my own scanner if I wanted to know when to come to the station. They would not issue me anything until after I proved myself. I am assuming its like that everywhere. Why would you want to issue thsi equipment to someone who might not come around?

This appears to be a HAM or amateur radio on both the 2 meter and 70 cm bands, and requires a FCC license to transmit on. In several areas those who are licensed do monitor the airwaves and if you are tracked down transmitting without a license the fines can be quite hefty and you will get a nasty gram (sample) from the FCC at a minimum.

There are also concerns and numerous laws regarding to mobile use of scanners that can be tuned to law enforcement bands. I would look at http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/ to look at the legal implications of what you want to do, and http://www.radioreference.com/ has a wealth of information regarding scanning and scanners as a whole. The laws, rules, and regulations can be difficult to navigate. My suggestion is to wait and let the squad issue, or if you are like me and have no patience talk to the powers that be and donate a used pager that you can get off of ebay (link) to the squad and let them get it programed so it can be issued to you. Once it is issued by a recognized entity you will not have to deal with all the legal implications of the other way around.

So this does NOT have scanner capabilities then right?

What frequencies is your hopeful dept operating on? if they fall within the rx range then it will pick it up, but because it can transmit you don't want to use it. Transmitting on frequencies that you're not authorized or licensed to be on is technically illegal

In short NO.

In our area police and sheriff can and does confiscate portable radios and scanners when you cannot produce proper credentials that allow you to operate and listen mobile. In the under 100.00 dollar category you are not going to get a lot of bells and whistles such as the tone capabilities. You should be able to get a used pager that will do everything you want it to do for under 100.00 dollars.

If you like PM me the information for the Squads you are looking at, I will need

Name
Address
City
State
County

The more information I can get the better. The FCC licenses that they have to have to transmit are public record, once I see the frequencies in use I should be able to point you in the right direction for the pager you would need for that squad.

I use a scanner at home to monitor whats going on in my area to be prepared, and yes I have one in my car as well so i can hear all frequencies used in my event. I find them useful if you like to know whats going on
