Into stirring the pot a little and venting.... I am tired of hearing the argument that paramedics are almost doctors. As justified by what the word paramedic means when you break it down.... Blah blah blah. "paramedic means almost a doctor" yea except for the 6 additional years of schooling and residency. NOW I am not saying that being a medic does not prepare the intelligent for med school but far is being a medic from a doctor "." critics?

I'm not quite sure that will stir the pot here. I'd be surprised if many if any of us actully believe that. Have you followed through in the field and are you working in EMS? Last we heard, you were just starting.

M, refer your crowing buddies to EMTLIFE and have them say that

(Good case of "Let's you and him fight").

While not really relevant to the discussion, i am just starting in health care. I've worked for 3 years in direct patient care and am just starting in the prehospital arena. the fact still remains that enough people have made this and similar remarks to prompt me to bring it up here. AND if I can troll a little while I'm at it, why not?

These are not my buddies, just a more common "attitude" I've observed.

I've never met anyone who compared Paramedics to Doctors.

+1

...although the last arena event I worked I had one of the talent c/o difficulty breathing. The road manager, or whatever his title was, came to me after i examined her and was all like, "So what's the verdict, Doc?" Of course I didn't correct him, but I did give quite the educated, medical, explanation of what was going on...

Same. I've seen doctors make some pretty stupid mistakes, but I by no means think that I am better than they are. Nor do I know many (if any) medics that think they are superior to an MD.

I've never heard of comparing paramedics to doctors... but I HAVE heard of comparing paramedics to God...

The difference between God and a Paramedic?

Simple: God doesn't think he's a paramedic. :D

I'm with everyone else on this matter. I've never heard of medics saying they are almost doctors.

And I am personally an EMT-God who will one day become a ParaGod

I see lots of paramedics call themselves ditch doctors. While I'm positive most of them are not deluded enough to think they're comparable to doctors I can see how one would get that impression.

We're all people. Our f-ups can all be catastrophic too.

I joke that as EMS our job is to stop people from dying, whilst a doctors job is to fix them. An oversimplification for sure, but gets the point across regarding emergency medicine

Actually I've only heard the opposite which is, "let's do the minimum level of care for the patient and have our hand held and not utilize clinical decision making because were only Paramedics and not doctors".

I've never heard any Paramedic compare themselves to a doctor. That would just be idiotic.

The only comparison I have heard is a Paramedic's scope of practice to that of a midlevel practitioner. For how much schooling medics get we have a pretty wide scope. Some states and agencies more so than others *cough*California*cough*.

I've never heard a direct comparison of a paramedic to a physician, though.

Sounds like someone met a paragod and didn't like what that paragod said to them...just sayin'.

Agreed. I've never actually heard any paramedics compare themselves to a doctor...well unless it's telling the patient "I'm not a doctor".

Maybe the confusion stems from the fact that some of us (myself included) are of the opinion that what we as paramedics do, is practice medicine. It may be a truncated, substandard version (and most of us are painfully aware of that fact), but nonetheless, it is medicine.
That is not to say that any of us consider ourselves to be doctors (except maybe those of us who are doctors...)

Never heard a medic compare themselves to a doctor. Everyone Ive met in EMS knows their role in the system, and provide treatment as such.
