I am currently going to school for EMT-I in Las Vegas...I really want to be a Firefighter/Paramedic but i have the chance to test for Fire in Colorado Nov. 1st..Im wondering if i should forget about it for now until i finish paramedic school or just do it..but my other concern is will i have time for Paramedic school and will i still have a chance to be a medic for the FD

id say try it out, since you have nothing to lose, and alot of the time after working as an EMT for the fire department, they will pay for you to go to Medic School

Depends which Dept. If its Denver Fire, they don't really care if you're a medic since they're a BLS ONLY dept.

EDIT: And IIRC EMT-I in NV is the I/85 level, which means youd also only be eligible for EMT-B here in CO, so that won't buy you anything on the applications

Do private companies run ALS in Denver?

Do private companies run ALS in Denver?

Pridemark Paramedics(Primary Arvada and Boulder 911, backup Denver, IFT), Action Care (Primarily IFT and Wheelchair, does backup 911 for southern Denver areas), Capital City (No idea, jsut seen them around), Denver Paramedics (Primary 911 and IFT denver area, hospital run by Denver General), AMR (Primary 911 for Longmont, IFT in denver, backup denver 911), and Rural Metro (primary Aurora 911 with FD, overflow 911, IFT) all operate 911 (either primary or backup) in the Denver Metro area (I know I missed some areas they cover and/or a service or two)

And then there's the other FDs in the Denver metro who run ALS too like South Metro, West Metro, Aurora, Sheridan... among others

thats alot of Companies in one city running 911 lol, im sure its a ClusterF?

In my experience, some schools offer shift-based scheduling, so say if you have class on A-shift, you can work B or C shift.

However, I know people who are perfectly content with never becoming a medic if they can get hired on as an FF/EMT.

Disclaimer: If you don't want to do medicine, don't become a medic.

Technically it's not just one city. I said Denver Metro :P That means Aurora, Sheridan, Denver, Lakewood, Arvada, Wesminster, Wheatridge, Commerce City, Etc...

And I'm sure Lucid will come in and royally correct me since she's been here a hell of a lot longer than me

In Denver proper, DG (Denver Health Paramedics) are the primary 911, with a lot of the other privates running OLFA (overload for ambulance) calls when they deem it either BS or they're actually overloaded

It's not JUST Denver, but the entire metropolitan area, much like the DFW MetroPlex, where we have MedStar(municipal), AMR(and other privates), fire based, and 3rd service all in the same metropolitan area.

Intermediate EMT in NV is 1985

BTW Vegas sucks, go to Reno, they have an arch ... what, you can't say no to an arch! :D

Mr. Brown I am going to get a doctorate in under water basket weaving from an online college, then buy myself an orange jump suite just to tease you.

I can see it now ... "Yes good morning it's Dr Schulz speaking, we're a half mile away coming to you by road ambulance and ... whats that? am I fron the helicopter emergency medical service, well no .... but, hello, hello? ... Brown they hung up on me!":

"Of course they did. Hello, who am I speaking to one of the nurses? Oh it's Brown from HEMS, ... the helicopter yes .... oh don't worry about him, anyway we're going to bring you a patient...."

I am assuming your talking about the drcog test which is the test for several co fds ? I would say take it if you are really interested in working In co. Don't worry about it getting in the way of your I-85 cert, it's worth nothing here. To be honnest however there are thousands of people who take the test every year for just a few spots. I have never known anyone to get a job their first time around... although I am sure there are a few. The best way to get a job here is to work in a private ambulance company, get some experiance and know the fire fighters with each department before your test so if you make it through to orals with a department they already know who you are. Most of the people I know also have millitary experiance. So unless your set on working in a denver area fd it may be a waste of your time.

Yea i am talking about the dcrog i think im just gonna go for it...but i really do hate Vegas and there are no jobs at all so im looking to get out and Colorado has always been a place i want to live..but i thank you for the info it was helpful i thought my EMT-I would have been good lol

I wish I EMT-I was useful up here :P But then again it was the first NR cert I had so it was useful in getting me my EMT-B at all up here
