I have the opportunity to take a practical exam which will consist of NREMT scenarios and Denver Metro EMS Protocols. I'm not looking for direct answers, but just looking for advice from any of those who have undergone this test. I am new to Denver EMS and have had less than a week to learn all the protocols pertaining to an EMT.

Any suggestions as to which protocols I should focus on? Any general advice will be appreciated.

Thank you for any input

Most exams I have seen for protocols really like to ask questions like "what to do with avulsed teeth?", and what meds you have to call in for, standard fluid bolus amounts, and procedural stuff. If you can pass NREMT then Denver metro protocols shouldn't be too hard, although IV stuff is new to some EMTs, and some of the silly things under the trauma section get asked a lot.

You can find the Denver Metro protocols online, there isn't much EMTs can do so you should be able to master most of the stuff within a week.

Is this exam for a job?

Denver has a metro EMS? I Though it was a private service. (Denver health). Please gimme more info if you can, I'm looking at CO for jobs.

The City and County of Denver is serviced by Denver Health Paramedic Division, with most of the metro area EMS provided by fire departments. However the medical directors for the majority of the Denver-metro EMS agencies get together and write a unified protocol for the Denver Metro area.

However only a handful of agencies actually use the Denver-metro protocols, most use it as a guide to write their own. Denver Health, Pridemark, Aurora FD, Littleton FD, and Rural/Metro don't use Denver protocols, I'm sure most others don't either but I can't say for sure.

In the end most agencies have different protocols that look similar. It's a good idea that fails in implementation.

Yes this is for a job, and I'll b be sure to review the protocols that are not considered standing orders as well as the IV medication dosages. Thanks again.

Denver Health isn't private, but it's no longer part of the city, either. It's managed by the Denver Health and Hospital Authority, an independent agency with a board appointed by the mayor.

You can get to an online application at denverhealth.org. Search paramedic under careers.

Now that I'm off my phone;
Your interview is going to be dependent solely upon the agency that you are applying with. Without that info I doubt any of us here can be of much help. Interviews vary widely from place to place. You're better off looking good, acting like you want to be there and doing the best you can based on what you know. This last bit can be addressed by being familiar w national standards (if you can sort what that is).

Any agency throwing protocols into an interview is already skewing it in favor of a certain group. You learn protocols after you are on the clock, not prior to employment.

Also; don't confuse "Denver EMS" with an agency in the Denver Metro area. They're two separate animals.

Good luck with your interview.

This os very true, especially given how big the metro is. I worked for ACA in Centennial and they're big on saying that they are part of Denver Metro EMS ... god i can't wait for my CO EMT-P card to come in so i can apply for DG

Good to see ya back here, Kipper.

Thanks Bruddah! I knew if they (OP) had any questions regarding DHMC that you would be the man to answer them.

Hopefully with me dropping to PRN, I can visit here a little more often.
