Alright Rural Kansas EMT-B here. Just have to post this because even though i shouldn't be laughing I am. We are a full time service here with part time employees as well. We are a county run organization so we do have those wonderful county commissioners:wacko:. So right now we have 4 full time employees to cover 5 days a week. we also work 12 hour shifts. One of those full timers is out with a herniated disc (compliments of the job). Now another fulltime employee is currently working on internship for MICT. He's here maybe mondays if we are lucky. That leaves 2 people to cover the week. Except the third fulltime person is a farmer as well and he wants to get all the combining done and start planting. Which leaves one...ME that is actually working full time. Now this story gets better I promise. We at the station house foresaw this all coming. We went and requested from the commissioners to hire another person if not two. Two of them passed it the third one said "well hold on a bit i need to think about this." WHATS TO THINK ABOUT???, Ok so that was three months ago she thought about it for two and a half months before we could finally hire another person. Its too late now. So to put add insult to injury, our part time people aren't even able to work the hours they should be able too. So me in my infinate wisdom accidently moved into a house three blocks away from the station so not only am I covering every day it seems every night too. HERES THE KICKER....The commissioners are complaining about overtime!!!! hahahahaha. I should scream I have been reprimanded because i'm working too much. That is just funny. guys i'm sorry. Thought you might get humor.

First, why in the world your management would allow time off to plow the fields when he's supposed to be in the rig is beyond me.

Second, they are not going to fire you because you're the only one running the calls, so if you don't mind it, run up as much OT as you can. Just don't burn yourself out.

Sounds like you need to find a new service. Any service that is that short staffed is nothing more than a liability. One person can't shoulder a service on their own. I don't care if you lived next door to the station, there's no reason that it falls on you to pick up all the extra slack.

I can see why the commissioners might be hesitant to put more staff on. I'm not totally convinced it's a staffing problem as much as a management problem. Management needs to enforce policy (with regard to hours worked, time off, etc). Management should not be approving time off if they're short staffed. If there are open shifts at work and I want a day off, I know my supervisors aren't going to approve it. They have to be able to meet operational demand.

If you want to work the hours and grab the overtime, feel free to do so. They will get over it or find another means to address the problem. They'll either get their employees to work, or fire the ones that aren't and hire those that will. Either way, I'm not totally convinced that adding staffing is the solution but more of a band-aid on a larger scale problem.

It is the management director is out with the bad back and ***. director is the one doing the farming. So yeah small management problem.

Call in sick for a few days. When there is no one to work, they will get the picture.
