Hi everyone,

I'm curious as to the differences and similarities between policing and EMS. Not the obvious ones (like we both respond to 911 calls), but the others that aren't really mentioned, as well. Hopefully we can have some former cops or vise versa explain what they found. Also why did you switch. Was it what you would expect? Anything of interest.

Thanks!

I will respond to this later when I have more time so I can give a full explaination. (I'm replying so I can subscribe to this thread and not forget it)

I work full time as a police officer, part time as an EMT, and work as an EMT on our SWAT team.

Thank you so much! I'd be honored with an explanation with someone in your situation!

Thanks again so much!

I think this thread got forgotten about! Could we get some replies? :-)

We deal with the same doo doo heads.

Police take them to jail.
EMS takes them to the ER.

That's the similarity.

The differences are vast. It is two completely separate functions; medical aid vs. law enforcement. As such, EMS does not have police powers, nor do we have weapons or are we charged with apprehending criminals and conducting investigations.

I'm not completely sure I understand your question or what you are looking for.
We're ambulance drivers & they are police car drivers. ;)

It should serve to be self evident. Apples to oranges. Well, more like red apples to green apples.

EMS Training To Become A Police Officer

Hi all,

A question for this thread: what do you guys think of taking EMS training, for the purpose of becoming a police officer? Here in Canada, especially where I am, policing is very competitive and there are many former paramedics who are now police. I even once spoke to an RCMP officer who said it would be very valuable to have paramedics training on your resume when you apply.

What are your thoughts/opinions on that? (By the way, the Primary Care Paramedic program here is one year, which I've been told is between EMT-I and EMT-P in the U.S.)

Thanks.

Not too sure about Canada, but most US agencies want Military Service, solid work history, and a Bachelors degree. While having your medic will probably hold some merit, having the above will definitely be in your favor. Still, it'll be super competitive.

With my moderate knowledge of police work and my years as an EMT, I could write up a a handful of paragraphs on the similarities/Pros vs. cons of EMS vs. The Policia, but your question's are more geared over here:

There's even a sub forum for international law enforcement.
