Sounds like you are near San Leandro. Have you applied to
Royal Ambulance? According to their website, they currently have open positions for EMTs. I believe I failed to get hired by them because at the time I applied, I was <21, and then I tried applying after I turned 21, but got a fairly quick message saying I still did not qualify, and I am only assuming that's because I applied before the 6 month period was up (they hold onto your app for 6 months according to the message I received). Somebody from Royal Ambulance has told me that I should go to their human resource department. Somebody I know who finished EMT the semester before me got hired with them while I was going through the program, which was last semester. You should be eligible if you can work for ProTransport (21 or older, clean driving record, have an ambulance driver license, AHA CPR, EMT), and you would just need to ICS 100 and NIMS 700 online (two 3 hour courses really easy in my opinion).
I was told by an employee from
WestMed that they were looking for part-time employees, however, I applied, called, was told "the next process would be in a month", called back every two weeks, but the last time I called, the dispatcher said "we are currently not hiring".
While AMR is slow at hiring, they lost their 911 contract to Paramedic Plus in ALCO, a friend of mine recently got contacted by AMR, and was told that academy would be this month. I guess they are still doing BLS in ALCO. He's been waiting for a year since his interview. Another friend applied for AMR in Santa Clara County, and he still hasn't gone through academy or been contacted about it. He's 7th or 8th on the list he tells me (I forget which number exactly, but <10 cause he always says that he is gauranteed to be in the next academy), however, that looks grim since Rural Metro might be taking the 911 contract there. More he said she said, I hear from another source that they are doing interviews in San Mateo County even though they have too much employees already. I think those who proceed after the interview will probably have to wait >1 year, but that's only what I believe, I cannot say whether that will be true or not, and I have no real inside information on it.
Motivation wise, I immediately started helping out at my local EMT program. I occasionally demonstrate the skills to the entire class, but usually to individual students, which is alright. I get to watch and occasionally check off students with their skills. If I have questions, I ask the instructor like a student. Helping out has helped me realize the skills I am weak in, improve them, and also (re)learn things.
I'm also taking a Phlebtomy class, reading books, and now I plan to do something that I should've done in the first place which was to take real college classes towards earning a degree.
Talking with most people, they don't believe that working as an EMT is that great (the ones I do know who are doing IFT are trying to get out of it and go into becoming an ER Tech), would only be motivating for a couple of months before IFT starts getting to be repetitive and you start feeling like a vital sign monkey as it was described to me.
