So I joined the forum in January and have been off for a while debating a new career in Emergency Medicine. Life has been nutty and blahh, blahh, blahh....

Since last on I have interviewed twice for a local FD/Ambulance Company and been accepted into their EMS program and hopefully start training next month. I started processing in the Air National Guard in 2012 and am all accepted and ready to swear in next week as an Aerospace Medical Tech. BUT, still, how do I know I can handle the gore, guts and trauma I will most certainly encounter with no prior experience of training other than CPR/First Aid/AED? Is there anywhere on Long Island or NYC that will allow a ride along or two or three?

You'll handle it the same way everyone else does. It'll happen and you'll fall back on your training. If at the end of the day you don't want to quit, then I guess you can handle it.

Long Island is all volly departments that do a run or two a day.

NYC does allow ride alongs with FDNY I'm not 100% who you would need to contact though. Anyone I know has gone through a friend in which case you just get the paperwork and show up to work with them. I would offer but I don't work there anymore and don't have any contacts.

Il try and look into it.

Or you could try riding along with one of the voluntary (volunteer) departments in NYC...

I would love to do that. Any idea of a company that does that? Any contact leads would be awesome and much appreciated!

Thanks Dan. A friend of ours is the head Doc at a big hospital and said I can shadow her for a day, so yesterday I took her up on her offer. It was really cool. I got to see a lot of things I would call less than exciting but the stabbing victim made up for it! This dude got stabbed under his arm and on his jaw. He was extremely belligerent, which added a dice of spice to the mix as he spit blood everywhere yelling expletives to the Docs as they tried to help him. I managed to stand out of way and watch for a solid 10 minutes or so without throwing up or passing out so I guess this line of work may just be for me. I still think I am going to reach out to an NYC EMS crew to see about a ride along. Cant hurt!
