Today was my first day in the truck as a volunteer with my new dept and went on my first call since becoming an EMT. 2 car MVA with multiple patients. Had to extricate one of the pts but got her to the ED in good shape. All went well, everyone lived, and I didnt screw up! My pt was extremely polite and thankful to us for the work we did. I know very few are like that, so that made my day. It may come across corny to some but it feels extremely good to know you can be there for someone, help them, and really make a difference in a bad situation. Just hope I can keep that attitude even when things dont go so great.....

being an 'interesting' call, you'll probably never forget it (as it is your first)

welcome!

Good Job! Sounds like you did well. Many more to come.

Actually I find that most patients are polite and thankful. Its just that the annoying, ungrateful wretches are the ones we complain about so they seem more prevalent.

Congratulations!!

I'm glad everyone lived and okay for your first call. :)

Congrats on now being an "experienced" EMT. Why is it that 75% of the calls I go on are old people that can't get up but everyone I've talked to has had a monster of a first call?

That's the real world of EMS!B)

That's awesome! A thankful patient always helps. Man, I would give anything to even be a volunteer around here. It sucks watching from the sidelines....

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the thoughts. Cant wait to get at it again. Marineman, talk about first calls, on my first ride-along in B class, we had an OD with arrest...I got to do NPA and chest compressions, and then helped medics set up IVs in the unit and hand them drugs they needed, etc. That was on friday the 13th. And same day got to chat with a intoxicated little ol lady with a broken toe, who just wanted to talk about her abusive crack head boyfriend, but didnt want to have him arrested. Guess I am getting the full gambit. I have been bled on, guess I wont be fully 'baptized' til i get puked on!

Oh boy now you did it!

Watch what you wish for!! :P

Congrats. I love patients like that who are nice and sweet. One time we had a baker acted patient, she called us all monsters and told us we didnt care about our patient. That kind of stung, so its always refreshing to hear about appreciative patients!

Dont worry about being corny, Im the exact same way. I love EMS because it does feel good knowing that you are making a difference. To me it means my exsistance isnt worthless because Im doing some good for someone.

Congrats! Welcome to the world of EMS. Hope you have a long career, stay safe :)
