ok so this is my first post...hi lol

down to business so I decided that I wanted to become an emt one of the major reasons being (believing) that there are flexible hours and I can work on the weekends. Other reasons having to do with the health field. So i am trying to sign up for a class from a local CC and they offer the following:

- EMT A150 - EMT-1/Basic
- EMT A151 - EMT Clinical Internship
-EMT A180 - Orange Cnty EMT Accreditation

My question to you guys/gals is that is it true about the flexibility of the hours. The reason im asking is that I am going back to school for my masters and I really need some sort of income. Furthermore, if I get accredited in Orange County does that mean I cant work in any other county?

Thanks.

Most of the jobs I have seen and worked involved a 7 days on, 7 days off arrangement of 12 hour shifts, OR 24 on /48 off, OR 48 on 72 off (rare). Unless you are going PRN, I really doubt it. Even PRN is subject to being called in on a
week day.

While I can only speak to the state in which I live, I know several people who work two jobs in this industry and many more who work and continue their education. I work a 48/96 shift with a mandatory OT shift every 12 days and teach on the side. We have several part timers who work for other EMS services or Fire - so I see that it can be done.

We also have several full time employees who are also going to school. They are responsible for filling their shifts, but they can swap or find someone to fill all or part of a slot while they are in school or clinicals.

It can be done...but it will take effort on your part.

not to be the downer.... but have you not seen how many people are posting about not being able to find a job in EMS

An EMT-B doesn't quite get paid a "living wage," are you planning on taking out loans to supplement your cost of living, while you return to school?
