Today at an ER I saw another crew with a patient using a nebulizer. The corrugated outlet tubing was bent gently such that a U-turn was formed, so that the exhalation was actually directed back at the patient's own nose. Some tape was used to hold the tubing in that shape.

Why was that done? Is there a real benefit, backed up with research and evidence, or is this just some thing that some do because they heard it's better?

We use the aerosol masks not the peace pipe things.... We also have MDIs. So not sure :dunno:

I imagine Just so it got blown back at the patient...

We have these

We are only supposed to use them for patients with potentially contagious illness though... (they cost $15 each)

The only reason I can think of is to reduce exposure to exhaled particles by directing them back to the source.

This.

I do it so they'll get (1) a bit more, and (2) they can't rocket cough stuff at me. I'm an asthmatic and have personally done that style of HHN for a while.

Remember, the plural of anecdote is data.
