A Spanish pathologist who specialized in a human strain of mad cow disease died Saturday, and officials suspect the disease played a role in his death, officials said.

I am interested as to how he got it.

Prions are apparently quite difficult to inactivate. I can't find anything with open access or useful abstracts on the subject, but Wikipedia summarizes well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prion#Sterilization

I imagine that, unlike Marie Curie, it wasn't ignorance and poor practices as much as it was the difficulty of getting all the nasties off. On the other hand, that's why we have high biosafety levels.
