Latex Allergy Question

I've never had one, never known anyone who has.

Is it possible to develop one on only one hand, and mainly one area (top of the hand)?
 
Hey Chimpie! You are talking to the queen of latex allergy, anyhow, is it the same brand of gloves you have been using all along or did your job switch brands. Has it been very cold also where you work, that can also aggravate
the problem. Last but not least, have you switched brands of anything, lotion, body soap, laundry soap etc. It also might be contact dermatitis. It can start on one part of the body. Also if the gloves have powder in them that can also set some folks off. Let me know :)

Chances are you may not have a "latex allergy" rather a topical dermatological reaction maybe from the glove powder, or maybe some of the petroleum in the latex. If it is isolated in one area, it is not usually considered a "direct allergy.

When I use "high protien" gloves frequently (usually the cheap gloves) I will get "contact dermititis" on my wrists and the backs of my hands. This happens more in winter, an I use topical anti-itch ointment and it resolves on its own.

If I use powdered gloves, when I take them off and they "snap" the powder into the air, I have a moderate allergic reation - tearing, watery eyes, runny nose, red eyes, flushed face... I take benydryl and I get better :).

If I use the good quaility, low protien golves (microflex, etc) I have little or no ploblems. If I get any rash, it is where the cuff of the glove rubs on my skin, and only after prolonged, constant use.+
 
Our Paramedic instructor has a latex allergy.... On many occasions when she makes someone mad, they have threatened to rub a latex glove on her office door handle when she's not there..... No one has done it though... I sure hope she doesn't read this forum.... lol.....

I am sorry, but that just strikes me as totally immature. Why would you even threaten to do something like that, knowing how severe some people's allergic reations can be? (And by "you" I don't necessarily mean you, the person posting, but you in general.) Not only is it immature, it can be down right dangerous. I have an anaphylactic reaction to Levoquin, and let me tell you, it is an incredibly scarey feeling when you are in the middle of that and know exactly what is happening to you, up until the point where you pass out. There are plenty of things I may joke about with people, but intentionally exposing them to an allergen would never be one of them.

I agree with you wholeheartedly..... No one has done it and I was just saying how we know someone with latex allergies......... I would never consider doing it....... I'm sorry I offended you by that statement..... I am not here to cause trouble nor make light of any situation, nor sound immature..... I just joined today, so I'm not familiar with everybody, but I'm sorry that I started out by offending you...... I sincerely apologize.....
 
No, you didn't offend me and I wasn't taking your statement as you were the one that had said you would do it. I was just voicing my opinion about what some of your fellow students had said. No apology necessary. :)

Sorry for the lack of a response to this. It's not me with the supposed allergy, it's my girlfriend. She's a baker for Panera and goes through several pairs of gloves a night. She didn't have any reaction at first but soon developed what looks like a rash near the wrist on one hand, and on the top of her other. Even with gels and creams the rash is not getting any better. She'll be going to a determatoligist next week.
 
I hate to hear about your gf, and I hope it gets better. You can develop an allergy if you dont wash you hands between gloves. But again, I guess it goes back to the powder in them, so maybe she needs to switch to the powder-free gloves.
