Just out of curiosity do you guys/ladies get along with other public safety officials? Meaning, for example, do either city police or Sheriff look down upon your profession? Do they ever express through verbal or non-verbal communication they are more superior? lol

Our service area we generally get along with all law enforcement because they need us just as much as we need them. Also I'm married to a cop so when I'm there he's usually around to assist EMS. :)

Nope. Never had that problem. The ones I have met is that we do our own thing so they don't say anything bad.

The only problem I have had is when they start using their code talk when telling us info. Because we don't know the codes.

I almost took the police officer route toward the beginning of the year, until I found out it wasn't for me. Not all, but a few officers I did some ride alongs with seemed to be pretty "cocky." So, I was just curious, from personal experiences, how they act around EMT's/Paramedics. You are definitely correct in that they need EMT's/ Paramedics just as EMT's/Paramedics need them.

Yeah, I see how the code talk could be a problem lol. I have a buddy in law enforcement and sometimes he'll accidently incorporate police codes into our social conversations lol.

I've had issues with a few individuals, but never a service as a whole.

I guess there is a few in every crowd. What sorts of problems did you encounter with these few individuals?

"Other" implies Ambulance Officers are public safety officials, which will get you weird looks here.

Yes, the Ambulance Service has a fantastic working and social relationship with the Police and Fire Rescue.

911 dispatcher who initially refused to send paramedics because I requested a "paramedic escort" (official term in the county wide policy book for any patient transported with paramedics, and I have a bad habit of letting stupid official terms make its way into my vocab), followed by attempted to EMD me and then refusing to give me an ETA because the paramedics were "responding with lights and sirens." When I call for paramedics (which was done through the 911 system), I always ID myself as "___ Ambulance crew." I so should have called the non-emergent number and complained to the supervisor over this one just due to the pure stupidity once the call was over.

Had a paramedic with another fire department (called for for a different patient) essentially order me to take my patient out of my ambulance and transfer it to the contracted 911 provider despite the patient being packaged, loaded into my ambulance, had report given to the paramedic in my ambulance and had the paramedic already initiating care in my ambulance because the other crew had a mod and we were in a van. This is despite the county medical director weighing in officially that this was never an appropriate request. However I'm not going to get in a **** measuring contest on scene over something like this.

Had RNs at a few places get mad for not calling paramedics. Probably the most memorable incident was the 20 second transport where the only traffic control device between me and the hospital was a stop sign and the hospital had to be passed just to get out of the neighborhood that the SNF was located at.

Wow, these events are just ridiculous. Sorry, you had to go through all that bull. Each story seems to just have one individual taking advantage of their title or position. Using whatever power they had to their advantage.

You will see that with certain people in any field.

Never had problems with the PD; usually the officers on the local FD's when I was at my FT job in a Private Service. The medics were all cool, but the officers could be a pain.
more than a few times, we were told to unload the patient off our Ambulances, and leave the scene; when the FD didn't have an ambulance on scene yet. Especially funny when the FD was BLS and we were ALS.

but like I said it was the officers on the engines and ladders, not the medics.

Had a batt chief suspend a LT on scene because he was physically trying to pull our cot off the truck, while I was in process of Intubating a pt after a motorcycle wreck: the FD amb was still 5 min away and BLS. I actually had to have a PD officer handcuff the LT to a sign post till his boss showed up. they never teach you how to tube a patient when someone keeps moving the cot

The cops around here are pretty cool. They'll come, and secure the scene, and will help us out of we need it. I've noticed that they will leave the scene (usually after asking if we need anything), if there is something else happening in the area, that needs PD.

Being an EMT with law enforcement on scene is like being a nurse with a strange MD.

Settle down, do your stuff properly, listen up for orders but weigh them, ask appropriate questions, and soon enough you'll be sharing doughnuts. Don't try to be a cop.
The size of your town will have a lot to do with how well things go.

never had a problem. they usually stay out of the way and let us work. If they need info from a pt, they will meet us at the hospital.

We use the same codes they do so we dont really run into the communications trouble
