Hi everyone. This is my first post so I wanted to introduce myself and make a comment. I'm an emt in jersey for 4 years now. I'm about half way done with medic school. I read alot of posts before I joined and everyone here seems genuinely nice and interested in the field. The one thing I am curious about, people keep saying they have their worst ems moment and I can't figure out why I don't. We see some terrible trauma where I work and I feel unaffected. I love my job (not the pay though) but I just don't get the feeling like I make a difference. But anyway it's nice being here with u all.

First off... WELCOME ABOARD!

Second:

You do make a difference. Every transfer you do, every "meaningless" call to you may be nothing. But to a patient just by being nice to them or telling them it will be ok makes a world of difference.

You meet people sometimes on their absolute worst day. And a kind face and a reassuring demeanor can help more than you will ever know.

And just because you don't think you have a "worst" moment doesn't mean anything. Maybe you just haven't gotten a call that really got to you, or you deal with things better than others

It's not a negative thing. We all function differently. But then you can't be totally apathetic. Your patients need you to care.

Did you see that some of those guys had stuff that wasn't super traumatic and devastating? It's because sometimes, stuff just doesn't get to you. Trust me, there's something out there that will, but it might be the last thing you expect, like getting shafted on your paycheck, or having one truck too many break down during your shift.

The bagger at the grocery store makes a difference. The guy at the McD's drive through also makes a difference. You make a difference, if you stop to look for the evidence.

Welcome to the forums!

Thx guys. Nice to meet you. I feel burnt out and I'm only 4 years in!! Lol. But like you said triggers are different for everybody. I'm just waiting for the one job that I feel good about what I do. But again I wouldn't trade being an emt (soon medic) for any job out there.

If you really mean that last sentence, I suggest you think hard about it and find a positive mental attitude that will allow you to participate in EMS without feeling like you're burnt out. Burnout is more than half from within yourself, how you approach the annoying parts of your day.

Spend your next shift evaluating each task you acheive, and who that benefits. When you see the HUNDREDS of positive interactions you can have each day, take advantage of them, and leave people better than you find them everywhere you go. THAT is making the best of a day.

I guess theres really nothing funny about it. I feel like i missed a whole phase of this field. We had two major calls today and yes i do get a bit nervous still when it comes too shootings because we dont get one everyday. But i dont feel the excitement or that it even matters to these people if we work as hard as we can to help them.

I cant stress enough that i dont mind waking up in the morning and going to work. The people i work with a great coworkers some excellant humans!!
