I am 19 years old living in NY, and have signed up for an EMT - B class. I want to work in Washington or Oregon as a paramedic, but hear the process isn't as easy as it should be. The original plan was for me to complete this class, find work as an EMT for a year, then sign up for paramedic school in one of those States. I've seen some of the reciprocity procedures for WA but still don't know how easy it would be trying to sign up for school there while getting certification from the state and everything else. I also don't know how the job market compares over there to NY.

How easy is it to move to those states with only an EMTB and get reciprocity? What about with a paramedic license? How hard would it be to get a job out there if I only had a NY paramedic certification? I also can't find many paramedic only programs, especially in Oregon where they seem to lump both together.

Also do you need all those shots to work as an EMT or sign up for a class? I see it in most of the paramedic prerequisites but not anywhere else. Sorry if this wasn't cohesive or organized at all, but thanks to anyone that helps and I'll probably have more questions as time goes on.

I am not sure for EMT, but for Paramedic in Oregon you will need an AAS in EMS, or a bachelors degree in any field, or 5 years NREMT-P experience to file for reciprocity. I think there is also a way to get a provisional paramedic cert if an agency and medical director sponsor you, the state gives you maximum 2 years to complete the degree and your under provisional probation from your medical director.

In Washington, there is no degree requirement but you have to have an agency affiliation before you can become Washington state paramedic certified(at least it use to be that way).

I moved a few years ago, maybe someone else has some more up to date info.

Still need affiliation in WA. I've been looking at transferring at my company that way, and that's still on the books

So I would apply for a job in WA without an affiliation or state certification, and whoever would be hiring me would take care of it? What if I'm not applying for a job and just want to go to school there but need to be affiliated, would anyone just bring me on? Would I have to work for them to become affiliated?

You can go to school and become an EMT in Washington but can not get a state certification until you are affiliated. (Employed or volunteer). From the time you apply for certification until approval, it can take upward of 6 to 8 weeks.

Search for past posts on the Washington EMT/Paramedic education and certification process.
