Growing bariatric population

My only beef (no pun intended) is why would a rehabilitation hospital discharge a quintuple bypass patient that would not be able to take care of themselves? We have a person here who is 350+ and falls down constantly. They are unable to get themselves up and the family has no equipment (hospital hoist) or like that to get them up from the floor. Kind of hard at my rural department to be the one of the few that can respond during the day. Always, we end up getting mutual aid or try calling in firefighters to assist.

And why not exactly? I think we have a serious obesity crisis on our hands in this country right now, and the healthcare system needs to prepare to deal with it.

Because, people should not get that fat. I am not saying that we should not build equipment to prepare to deal with it... I am saying that we shound not HAVE to...

Unfortunately sometimes it does. And what's really sad is that we as health care providers usually deem them less worthy of our respect because they're morbidly obese.

A patients a patient... no question there and we should treat them all with respect everytime, I am just saying that we should not have to use special equipment to deal with it. We should also not need to build larger prisons, or many other things we do to keep up with the failures of society.

I'm in agreement there (have a dietician in the family), this crisis should have never happened. Kind if pointless thinking though, we still need to deal with it one way or another, and soon.

We shouldn't work in this field, people should be able to have their quack make house calls. Like in the old days. Cry me a river.

One of my big motivators for busting my *** in the gym is treating the morbidly obese and seeing how rapidly their health declines. A 35 year old missing a leg because he didn't take diabetes seriously and with renal failure for the same and who's already had two heart attacks? Yeah, he's a frequent flier of mine, and I sure as hell don't want to end up like that. I've struggled with being a fatty all my life, I've been overweight for as long as I can remember. Its a constant struggle and it sucks. It sucks really bad.
Its hard keeping the weight off, its a struggle every day. Sitting there watching your 160 pound partner who doesnt work out tear into fast food for all three meals while your munching on cucumber doesn't help.
So in that sense, I feel sorry for these people, they never had the kick in the rear that I had to motivate them to change their life style. But on the flip side, the three step program (don't eat that :censored: , get off the couch, don't eat that :censored: ) can't be all that hard if I'm doing it.

Im with adam. My single biggest fear is ending up like my pts.

i already have it planned out. I live on the.second.floor. If I ever need 911 even if im dying, I will scoot myself down the stairs. I dont want people having to carry me.

Questions and observations , response to replies.

1. Don't worry about us retired fatties becoming behemoths; when you hit mammoth weights, you don't live that long.
2. How about when you have to dismantle a window and egress the pt from their house because the doors are too narrow? Popping a door off the hinges can help, but I've heard of cases where a window had to be disassembled and about twelve firefighters needed to pass the patient on a mattress out and into some sort of transport.
3. Anyone study median time from EMS arrival to patient leaving the scene for humans of various weights?

Our service does not have bariatric stretchers

True that! Including our muscles and stretcher abilities, buwaha

I'm pretty sure we have the highest rate of obesity in the OECD; i.e. most obsese number of people not the biggest people (size).

Auckland has one bariatric ambulance, everywhere else well, if the patient can't walk then you call another crew or the Fire Service to come help. Patients have been known to have been transported on a tarp dragged into the ambulance by those large burly blokes that ride a big red truck, not that such a method is terribly dignified but what else can you do?.

From memory our Stryker stretchers can hold up to 300kg, but I would have to look it up.

I've lifted a bloke who was 190kg on the stair chair before, well, I had three people helping :D

What about the 441 lb child molester that calls twice a week even after his doctor has told him to stay home? I'm so tired of this guy.

Youre not there to judge a person they are still a patient and a person.

Then don't work at a company whose raison d'etre is to service the general public. If he's abusing the 911 system, then there's a legal path to peruse to stop it. His criminal record, however, is irrelevant.
