I'm planning on starting my EMT training shortly and plan on moving from the DC area to Las Vegas. Does anyone have any info on the companies there? Does the state have a certification requirement or will they accept NREMT? Pay Rates? I intend to go all the way through EMT-P in an accelerated program. My background is Marine Corps, Executive Protection with College Degree

Thanks for any info you can pass my way

I talked to a guy who is an EMT-I there for MedicWest and he said you could email him for info if you'd like. PM me if you want his address.

Isn't Vegas fire-based for 9-1-1 service? I'd look it up, but I'm on my phone. ;)

There is actually debate over this right now, on whether or not 911 calls should be transported by FD or Private.
Vegas FD has RA's available and right now they have a weird system in place on how and who gets to transport. Policts are playing a big role, but something to consider because if FD does end up transporting that is a huge part of MedicWest (formally AMRs area) EOA and they will most likely be cutting services if they don't retain the contract.

Terrible One is correct, Vegas uses private for most if not all transports. I worked on the strip in a casino enviroment. High end shows like O, and Concerts the casinos require a private standby especially if they dont have their own EMT's. But right now , pricate is dispatched to all medical calls, and then goes from there. I dont see that going anywhere soon. I dont think the FD has the staffing or desire to run transport.

On the flip, you can take your EMT and get into veneitian security, planet hollywood, Caesars or some of the others as an EMT. There are a few. Not all though.

I would concur with Livewiremaxx - Look into venue medical staff... it's somewhat different than "street" EMS... but can be VERY interesting.

Last I heard, FD did ALS response in Engines and/or Ambualnces, and the FD ambualnces transport sometimes... and sometimes they turn it over to a private unit. As of a year or two ago, the Priviate services were AMR, and MedicWest, which is now owned by AMR, but operating as a separate company in that area. (Only AMR could be big enough it would actually compete against itself :D ).
