Im new to this forum and have been thinking about being a emt. I use to be a correctional deputy in Az but moving to Cali everyone is on a hiring freeze, and I want to have a back up plan. My question is after becoming a emt where can you go from there? paramedic? working in a hospital? er tech? with having my emt certificate what else can I do with that? thanks in advance

Casinos, amusement parks, hospitals as ER and floor techs... ambulance of course. Apparently for some reason in CA, a lot of places require you to have a year on the bus before you can go to medic school.

"Backup plan" and "California EMT" don't mix. If you want to be an EMT, move out of Cali.

As far as what's after EMT, it depends on what you want to do. You can continue on to get your Paramedic and be a higher level provider. You can get on with an FD. You can work in an ER. You can work in other parts of a hospital or doctors clinic. You can be a lifeguard. You can do any number of things.

But if you want to make a career out of EMS, you'll almost undoubtedly need your medic.

So I can work for a private company or a fire department as Emt? If i going to do this im going to make it my career. what classes are involved to get my medic?

im going to take my emt basic classes in the fall, anyother classes i should take???

In San Diego you can go to Miramar College, SouthWestern, EMSTA, Palomar College. You can work for a private company there are a few Fire Dpt. That will hire EMT'S but you better get your Certs for being a fire fighter unless there willing to put you through the academy, otherwise you have to be a EMT-B for 6-12 months then you can apply for Medic school which takes about a year of schooling. Most Fire Dpts. only hire Medics.

F.Y.I. San Diego is very competitive place to work especially for EMT'S, Medics, FF, pretty much the medical field is going to be very hard to get on somewhere.

Best of luck!

I live in anaheim and plan on going to santa ana college to take my basic emt. from what ive been hearing is that it takes forever to get into a fire department. any truth to that?? what is the basic process to get hired on with a fire department?? im use to going through background, polygraphs, oral interviews, physicals. whats the advantages of working for a fire department over a private company?

Most private ambulance companies don't work out of fire station's atleast in San Diego they don't. I don't know if up there they offer bridged programs for EMT-B to work at Fire Staions with a Medic on board they do here through SDMSE, some ambulance places do. The hiring process for FF im not to sure about, i do know there are written tests you go through, the academy, oral interviews, then you go through the probation period for a year. I'm sure there's a little more to it then that. If you have questions about being a FF call or go to a Fire Station and sit down and talk to a FF if their not busy im sure they will be glad to let you in on the info.

or I can work at a hospital as a emt or medic? out of all the places to work as a emt or medic(fire fighter, private company etc) where are the most popular ones

Yes you can work at hospitals, most people work for an ambulance company, due to the fact most people want to become FF's. Im not to sure what popular companies you have up there. Go to google and do some reaserch. Or when your out driving around make mental note's of all the ambulances you see. I'm sure as you go through your EMT-B class you will learn a lot about your area.

sorry for all the question Im trying to get as much info I can about it. whats the average a emt or medic make not working as a ff

Hey no worries about all the questions that's what this is for. Most EMT's make a little more then minimum wage, but not much more then that. Unless you work for a private company some pay anywhere from 10-12 an hr. but the way you make decent money as a EMT-B is working OT. Medics can make 12 and hr and up, but like most places you work it's all about putting in the time to make some good money.

There are different types of EMT's, there's EMT-B(basic), EMT-I(intermediate), EMT-P(paramedic). It's worded differently anywhere you go but those are the types of EMT's. There's also FF/Medics where your a certified FF and certified Medic which is how most Fire Stations are staffed.

ok dont make fun of me so emt and emt-b are two different things?
EMT can be the general phrase for medics and EMTs of all levels. CA IIRC uses EMT-I EMT-II and EMT-P

so any advise on what steps i should take besides taking classes? I was reading somewhere on here about taking a ride a long?

Sure if you can find a Fire dpt. or private companies to allow you to do them do it. Take some Fire Science classes as well. Do some work at hospitals. Any experiance you can get will only benifit you.

doing the work at hospitals is only when I get my basic emt done im assuming thanks for all the feed back guys
