I have found that my chance of catching colds and flus is directly related to how well I take care of myself. It is directly related to how much exercise I get, how well I eat, how well I sleep. Times when I am stressed, eating and sleeping poorly, I tend to get sick.

As long as I take proper precautions at work (BSI, washing my hands, etc), I dont see any reason to get sick because of my patients. A few months ago, after auditing an infection control class, I stopped eating in the truck at work.I have gotten a lot more careful about how I clean my stretcher, bench, etc. and a lot more careful about how and how often I wash my hands. It really makes a world of difference, considering I havent gotten sick in 8 months, since starting the class.

And I thought Microbiology was scary!

I haven't noticed that I get sick any more than I did before. I believe that an earlier poster was correct in his assumption, if we see a rise in sickness in EMS workers I'd attribute it to poor diet and lack of exercise and sleep before being around sick people. And take your multi-vitamins.

i dont get any more sick now than i did before i started this job. now that i say that of course i will. lol. but i think why i dont is because i eat well and exercise.

If there's one thing I've been blessed with, it's a good immune system. I agree with the above, I generally get the sniffles more with stress, lack of sleep, etc, then with the job. I actually haven't been sick sick (like missed work sick) since high school. (/me knocks on wood).

Same here. So far as I know, I've never caught anything from a pt. Now motion sickness, that is a different story, 'specally since you catch that from the ambulance. (Or is it your partner?:P)

/me makes note that sitting in the back working on the laptop with the new hire driving back to base is not a good idea.

I rarely get sick. I used to get sick quite a bit before I started working in a child care center and for the first few months I worked there. I think I've been exposed to so much that I have built up some immunity.

I do, despite frequent hand washing. Usually just the respiratory stuff, but also occasionally food poisoning from dining at one of the "quality" establishments in the area that happens to be one of the few open on my shift.

I find it more common for my partner and I to pass colds back and forth with each other.

Only thing I've gotten that I can actually attribute to work, was the "flu" and I actually got it from one of the medics, not a patient.

Ha! I had something kind of like that happen to me once, a bunch of us caught it from one of the EMTs. Only problem was me and my partner came down with it at the same time while on duty. Some kind of virus with a sore throat and really high feaver. But no kidding, it took like two hours to go from feeling fine to being wiped out. When I finally got home my temp was 104.9. Later my partner told me hers was 104.5. I guess we should have found people to cover for us and gone home, but I didn't think it was that bad at first. Anyhow, I know better now, I was sick for 4 days after that when most people got over it in 2 days. I'm guessing that keeping on full throttle instead of resting did me in.
