Dispatch.

Our emergency ambulance communications centre does a great job .... although I pronounce EACC as "Eek" so it kind of reminds me of Eek The Cat, man wasn't he awesome? :D

HAHAHA I totally forgot about that show! Thanks for the flashback.

I don't think I understand the issue with dispatch. What I usually see is the lights all come on in the building and over the radio I hear "552 dispatching an ambulance", I respond and we get the address and head out the door. We report on scene, left scene, arrive at the hospital, depart hospital, back in station. It's almost robotic.

As for your original post, have you ever dispatched? not attacking, honest question. Have you actually done the job that you are fuming about another person doing incorrectly?

Steph is a dispatcher... and I'm pretty sure this thread relates to that rather the one she may have in the field. I might be wrong though.

Dispatchers are evil scary monsters that live to ruin your chances of getting rest and more importantly to keep you from getting off work on time.

THAT I can relate to! I got one call recently at 0559 when I get off at 0600.

at least you guys can understand your dispatcher... ours has such a bad accent we have to ask her to repeat like 3 times lol

Steph, I will give you a hug anytime you want.

One other thing, I recently (in the last 6 months) became cross trained as a dispatcher at my per diem job. and I used to complain how horrible all the dispatchers were, and how incompetent many are. Since I have completed the training, and see all the stupid rules and regulations they need follow, and see why they have some of the issues they have, I understand why problems exist, and many want to correct them, but they are hampered by upper management's rules and regulations. Some dispatchers are poor dispatchers, and they should be better, and I like to think I do the job better than half the dispatchers that have been doing this for a while. And this was after I had been dispatching at my other job fora while, which was a much busier system, and was certified as a dispatch instructor by two agencies for the past 5 years.

Bottom line, you can complain all your want, but unless you can do the job better than they can, who are you to say anything about their job performance? and if you aren't willing to learn how to do their job, and actually work behind the desk, how can you say they are doing it poorly, since you can't even do it?

I understand that you aren't attacking. And I AM a dispatcher. :-) In this particular incident, I was not fuming about dispatchers, because I was the dispatcher.

I was fustrated and did not make anything clear because I was pissed and probably would have said the wrong thing. I was upset because just about everyone complains about dispatch, as you said but majority of them have never dispatched before. I DO have to follow ALOT of policies and get emails daily about new things that we are changing- including vocabulary, status and our procedures.
I have been told by many many many guys that I work for that they LOVE me on the radio. I handle and talk slow and speak clearly for them to hear me, I do slip in a little giggle every once in a while.

But it's those ones that WON'T come sit with me and see all the BS I have to follow and put up with, are the ones that aggrevate me. Especially when I say the address 5 times on the radio- they get a fax and alert to their station and then proceed to argue with me telling me that I gave them the wrong address. Thank GOODNESS for recordings.

But.. I am JUST a dispatcher.

I do everything I can possibly do, to make their job easier. Even with other dispatch centers, if I make one decision for myself- if I actually THINK instead of having the computer do it for me, I will catch wrath from the management. But If I do not think outside of the box, I will catch wrath from the guys on the streets. Never ending battle.

But thank you DrParasite. You may not have realized but you layed out my message for me.

Bottom line, they can complain all they want, but unless they can do the job better than I can, who are they to say anything about my job performance? and if they aren't willing to learn how to do my job, and actually work behind the desk, how can they say I am doing it poorly, since they can't even do it?[/

Oh, and thanks for the hug. :-)

LMAO, I will say I do have my favorite dispatchers. Why could I see you making this a t-shirt?

I bet I could make a killing with them on ebay.

I used to have some great dispatchers. One in particular she would call on the radio many times during the long trips to our nearest hospital. She truly cared and made sure we were alright.

LOL Yeah I had a long haul, 3 hours, on Monday and they called 10 times and were like "MED X, ya'll alive"? lol

I do status checks on them every 30 minutes.. Some like it- others don't. Gives me something to do. I like being on the radio more than the phones..

Do not react to whatever they do, and you will survive.

NEver complain or speak ill of anyone, ever.

I have found that in all professions, people tend to gang up on a target to avoid being the target themselves.

If you want someone to vent to, pm me.

I do have a couple of dispatchers that I like and like me / my partner. One goes so far as if there are multiple calls, she will call me on my cell and ask which call I want before dispatching units. She's sent us on a few CCT calls and priority 1 transports.

If a dispatcher is willing to work with me, I'm willing to bend over backwards to help them out. My 2 dispatchers know if they need a truck to stay on late or whatever, we're there...

So long as it's not a bari call...

I dispatch volunteer fire only.

Most of my guys work other jobs, and they always text or call me to see if I am working- asking if they have had any calls, or what not.

From what I know/ think- they all like me. I don't think I've heard of anyone NOT liking me on the radio. This dispatch center is very new. We just opened up and took over from SO in April, so there are alot of new policies and system.

But I handle things for them outside of work. For example- yesterday I was off shift, they had some questions about policies before they discussed items with other chiefs. So I agreed to meet with them and give our explanations and the way things are now, and they gave me ideas on changes they want- asking for my feedback and suggestions. I know many of them appreciate it.

But because of the way our system works- Someone dials 911, it goes to our SO office and then transferred to our ambulance service. Our ambulance service does a quick alert to the medic units with just the address (before they have had a chance to EMD it) and we get all of those alerts on a computer. We are also supposed to be contacted via radio by the medic units and via phone from our ambulance dispatch and there have been numerous times when the alert system lags and we never receive a call. Then our career volunteers see an ambulance pass their station and blame us for them not getting their call. :-/ I have gave many suggestions- Get us a 911 PSAP line so SO can transfer the call to the ambulance service and we can have a muted line and get the address that way- or get an ambulance dispatcher in our center for our county (This option was mentioned before- and we agreed to pay for the console, all the computers and phones, radios etc, all they had to do is pay the salary of their ambulance dispatcher, and they said no.)

I can understand the frustration. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I miss being on a truck.

Thanks for all the help!

you think that's bad? I dispatch for a pretty busy system. We do ALS, BLS, and heavy rescue for our city. the PD gets ALL the 911 calls. they are the PSAP. we are a PSDP, and the FD is a PSDP. the FD and PD share a CAD system so they can see calls that come in.

We don't. we have to rely on either PD or FD calling us for MVCs. there have been numerous times where we will get the call for a MVC with entrapment, only to hear the FD already on scene putting tools to the car. or we will get the call for a rescue operation only after FD and PD have been on scene for an hour, and now they call for EMS.

The thing is, we (dispatch) can't jump calls based on radio traffic on other agencies. EMS chief's and our rescue unit has PD and FD radios, but we are not allowed to. So we will often get notified of the call after the other units are already on scene, and have been complaining that it takes EMS forever to get on scene.

as a new center, you can't do much. just document every time it happens, with time and date, give it to your higher ups to give to the SO and have them explain why you weren't notified. If anyone complains about you not giving them the job, just say the SO never notified you that you had a job, and they should take it up with the SO. btw, if the system lags or doesn't alert you, document that too and submit it to the SO's tech support people. that's what they get paid the big bucks.

See if you can top this, we got dispatched out two nights ago for a smoke odor at 3 am. the smoke odor was in the dispatch center!!!!! we get there and cant smell anything, did a full building search, still couldnt smell anything. two hours later, we finally get to clear and go back to sleep.

and its nothing against dispatchers, its that they toned out everyone in the county and did the full auto aid for an odor, instead of just doing one station.
