It's always that case by case basis just like many things in EMS. Try making this into a poll and we can see what we all think?
It depends on who is doing the IV mostly ;)
If the person can hit it in one shot and do it well.... Knock yourself out otherwise let someone who isn't rocking...
Makes sense... won't change the world...
They just popped one of these up actually about a mile from where I took my EMT classes.
We get this problem a lot here but fortunately we don't have a HUGE call volume and (knock on wood) a relatively low percentage of those are trauma/life...
Didn't know anyone was offended I'm sorry.
Wasn't directed at anyone...
Did not specify anyone....
Even said in the post I'm not being sarcastic towards the person...
Essentially used a little sarcasm to illustrate someones point I agree with...
Wasn't really going at anyone but sorry again if...
WHOA WHOA now... this is waaaaay to much for me to understand. Sure administering medications, starting IV's, and 12-leads are simple but " don't point the gun at something you don't want to shoot" just blows my mind. Ill probably have to get a book on this or something....
Not being...
Barring unusual circumstances, felons, and other techincalities....
Any idiot can now go out, buy a gun, and carry it around....
This is where YOU ALL decide.
Is EMS LESS competent than the general public or MORE competent?
By saying "I can't touch that weapon, I'm scared" you are...
I think we're all missing the point. It is ridiculously simple... Why do you need to call PD to do something the state already said pretty much anyone can do?!?!?!? And if you are employed in EMS you will most likely qualify for a permit... right there what makes you soooo different and...
ok it was a little bit but done so to make a point, never against someone personally. sorry.
I just find it so hypocritical that EMS personnel constantly complain about not being treated as a professional service but now have to have PD hold our hand on what will be more and more calls. The...
"SIR I need you to stop your heart attack since I am in charge of saving your life, In charge of administration of medications that with a slight overdose could kill you, and the State/NREMT owns my soul and every piece of information about me, but I can't handle the same firearm you walk around...
Guns don't jump out and get you...
+1 ^^
If you are responsible for whether or not a patient lives or dies you need to have the common sense to not leave a weapon where it can be obtained by someone else. This is where I have to assume I need (or obviously my superior at that time) needs to...
I've already put my $12 in, far more than the allotted $0.02
I respect the law and only break it when it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone but myself. Not every law lasts forever, its called progress. When people just go, "oh hey, its no worse than a few cups of coffee" but until...
I agree also and even as a heavy marijuana user I think your *** should be thrown out of EMS for being high on the job without question. But when my chief goes out to the bar that night I wan't to have my joint to blow off the stress. I have other friends I work with that use and its no secret...
Why not eat steamed veggies instead of a burger once in a while?
Why drive a car when you could ride a bike 15 miles to work everyday?
Why do you have a 32'' TV instead of a 22'' TV?
We can do this for days...
Why do we do a lot of the things we do? Because we like it. I don't ask...
As per advice, I'm sorry I have none but this scares the sh*t out of me. This is why you always leave it at home. Never will I be found with a sac in my car... if they came in my house that's another story.
I thought I'd let you know I feel your pain. I am not a drinker by any means, don't...
There is only about 798,654 posts about the same subject. We know some people suck at their jobs and some people are really great. That's just how life goes.
As per why people are entering younger and younger I would think the schooling is much more appealing. I know at my community tech...
lemme help lemme help!
Just try to be as busy as possible and seem as interested as possible. I know in my clinical it sounds pushy but I kind of have to ask or put myself in there since my nurse isn't thinking about me but the person on the bed... Just offer to do simple things and you might...
At what point after the first few lights are you compensating for something? You already have the biggest truck with the biggest tires but now you need the biggest display of "look at meeeee" glaring in everyone's face. I mean did you see how many people quickly responded to him being right...
I think you have proven that once a post goes past 2 or so pages it turns into a rant. What answer, or point, or enlightenment are you bringing us? Then eventually people start to complain about people complaining, so now, I have to complain about people complaining about people...
Basics Basics Basics.

Some biology thrown in
Learn common meds (ASA, Nitro, inhaled med ect.) and their contraindications
EMTspot has some good material
I can't stress the basics enough, its tempting to dive into advanced medical but being that you are so...
