Oddly enough, this is half of my destressing plan. I don't believe in drinking alone... it's not a good sign. But I do think that going out with coworkers, having a few drinks as a shift after your shift ends over an extended period of time can be destressing, and beneficial for camaraderie. Esp when you talk about non-work related stuff.

My current cartoon of choice is The Simpsons and Family Guy, but I also enjoy Archer.

So it's more the camaraderie then the alcohol that helps you unwind?

A fellow archer fan nice :)

1a. Try out therapy. Lots of my EMS patients go to therapy, so I decided to learn more about it. It was included in my insurance so I just called a guy up made an appointment. It was completely different from what I had been expecting. I kept on going, the co-pay is cheap, and you’ll be surprised what you learn about yourself and just how much of an impact different things can have on you. Consider a form of CE.

Excellent advice. I started going to a therapist to work on some issues completely unrelated to EMS but in the first session some very EMS related things came up. It's nice to have a place you can go every couple of weeks and just talk to someone about whatever is bothering you.

I highly recommend it.

2. A great sex life. I’m serious about this one. Thankfully my wife didn’t read the part in the marriage handbook about cutting sex off after marriage!

This is also a great healthy way to deal with stress. Same benefits as the gym, less sweat and more fun.

I have a commute to and from work that is just over an hour each way. I listen to my MP3 player to help me relax on the ride.

When I get home, I drop my stuff just inside the door, take off my boots, and often head right for the fur-kids. They're always excited to see me, and are often climbing over each other trying to get into my arms. I love lounging on the couch with them. Paddy is often snuggling against the side of my neck, Murphy likes to hang out in my lap, Connor will often squeeze in between my leg and the arm-rest. Josh will sit on my leg just above my knee, Pete likes to lounge on my chest. Rosie and Raimi are both too active to sit still, but they will climb all over me.

I usually take them out two or three at a time, though sometimes I will have all seven out at once. I love hearing them brux contently as I scratch them behind the ears and talk to them. Pete and Murphy are both very 'kissy' when you're petting them. They will twist around to lick you in return for your scratches. Its hard to be stressed when you're getting kisses from a fur-kid.

By the way, Pete is that handsome fella over there in my avatar.

I do a fair amount of pet therapy myself although mine is a bit bigger :)

And The Winner Is!

There are two things that are integral to keeping my stress levels low.

1. I worry only about those things that I can change and have control over. What that means is me. I have no control over anyone else. I cannot change other people. All I can be is an example for others.

1a. Try out therapy. Lots of my EMS patients go to therapy, so I decided to learn more about it. It was included in my insurance so I just called a guy up made an appointment. Congratulations to Jambi our grand prize winner in the EMTLIFE destressing contest. Jambi will win the custom paracord bracelet generously made and donated by veteran EMTLIFE member Angel1030.

It was a tough decision and took a while. In the end it came down to two entries and the CLs decided that the only way to decide it would be a good old fashioned gypsy style knife fight complete with shirts wrapped around our arms and fiddle music. ABCkidsmom and I squared off but because MMiz doesn't let us keep anything sharp in the CL break room anymore (because of the whole accidental penguin kabob thing) all we could find were bananas. It was a fierce fight let me tell you. There was banana and peel everywhere but then just when I was getting the upper hand and went in to twist the knife, uh banana I smacked my shin on the coffee table and it made my eyes water a lot (I wasn't crying I don't care what Jon says) and I called time out and anyway Jambi wins. I would have won if we had moved the coffee table like I wanted fyi.

Rather than risk another serious shin injury we've decided that all of the remaining entrants will receive an embroidered EMTLIFE patch :)

All winners will be contacted shortly. If you haven't heard from me by midnight tonight please send me a PM.

All of the entries were great and I encourage everyone to look through them as there are some great ideas on good ways to beat the stress we deal with on a shift.

Also if you didn't get a chance to enter this contest but would still like a paracord bracelet, keychain, or dog collar you can contact Anjel1030 to order one. For more info check out http://www.emtlife.com/showthread.php?t=30158

Oh and just fyi please don't use the paracord in the bracelet to tie a ladder to the top of your car as this voids all warranties on the car, ladder and bracelet.

I'm such a big fan of you, BBG, that I'll ignore the part where you smeared banana in my hair.

Fresh out of the shower now, and I'll say, "Good job on the contest." When's the next one?

As soon as I get the envelopes addressed I'll start planning something.

There may also be a big announcement soon as well. :)

When I finish work I destress by going down to my local gym for about 1hour. The gym also has a spa so that helps relax me after my work out. Once returning home from the gym, I call any of my best friends to see if they are free. If not, then it's dinner and tv time. If there isn't anything good on tv, then I usually watch one of my many DVDs or listen to music. It's very rare that I get stressed out at work, but my destress program seams to work every time. I love my job, it's just the manager that I don't like. She's the one that causes my stress (long story)
