What is the difference between edema and embolism? aren't they both clots?

Edema is an increase in the intersitial fluid (and can be caused by blocking the venious system or lymphatics, among other causes). Embolisms are basically caused by something traveling in the blood that blocks a vessel. So an emboli can be a clot, but it could also be a gas bubble (i.e. air embolism) or pieces of fat breaking off of a fracture (fat emboli).

amniotic fluid embolism, could be a piece of a tumor

embolism can also be a foreign body..such as the tip of an IV cath breaking off and traveling through the blood stream.
