What is a variable shift?

I am currently applying for a new hospital job, and the job description states that the positions are 49%, 60%, and 90% variable shifts.

I thought I knew what that meant, but I have heard many conflicting things and now I am unsure.

Scheduling is important for me, as I am currently a full time student and working full time. Is it possible to work these variable shifts with a fixed school schedule?

Honestly, if I were you I would call the hospital and ask. Variable shifts at one place may be different than variable shifts at another, so there is no guarantee any of the answers we give you will be right.
