I'm from PA. From what I've heard, you have to be either a certified EMT instructor or "an expert in the field that you are teaching" to instruct con-ed courses. I'm graduating med school in May, and I would love to teach some classes to the department I volunteer with after I graduate. There's not a lot of con-ed courses offered in the area because it's very rural, and I think it would be awesome to have some in-house training.

As a resident physician, can I be considered "an expert in the field"? I feel like it wouldn't be that hard to throw together a 1 hour lecture on asthma or belly pain assessment after 4 years of med school.

I think that depends your area of medicine. If its emergency medicine then perhaps, I would say your best bet is to check with your regional EMS council

Check with your state EMS council, in some states they grant the certification of Physician EMS Instructor. (or some similar title)

In some of the older systems, to become an expert in the field, you just had to have an EMS instructor vouch for you knowledge by signing a rather stock piece of paper.

Depending on your residency, you may have to actually do some teaching time in order to fulfil the requirements.

From experience, teaching advanced medicine to refresher courses can be a very thankless job.
