Volunteering as an EMT

Hello all,

I was just wondering how the "scheduling" and required amount of hours in a certain time frame works when volunteering as an EMT. I'm sure it varies by station, but what would be a good average, that you would say? I work as an ER tech now (taking my EMT course this summer), but I just want to volunteer so I will be able to re-certify once I have to. Any thoughts are appreciated.
 
It varies so much it's not even worth speculating. Some require on duty shifts, some allow you to respond from home, some have minimum number of shifts or hours, while others operate off of a point system. You'll have to go talk to the department with which you would like to volunteer.

Okay, thanks! I was just curious and wanted to see what I was getting myself into. I will for sure go to the local station and ask.
 
Every agency is different. I am on a volunteer squad, to stay active they require a minimum of 15hrs a month.
 
I just started as a volunteer in Kelso,WA and they require 30 points per quarter (every 3 months) which a 12hr shift is 10 points and a 24hr is 20 points and you get 1 point per call you respond to. That's just to give you an example.

That wouldn't be half bad at all then. Especially going into my senior year of nursing school full time with my job as an ER tech and working full time in role transition. So that would be easily doable. How long is orientation usually, and how long before you have to drive the rig? Sorry for all the questions!
 
Yea those numbers don't include what you also get for training that you can attend at the same time your on shift so your getting a bunch of points all at once.
