Well, I have applied to become a Volunteer Fireman at a local station... All my info is in, so it is now up to the membership/recruitment board to vote me in or not. Wish me luck!

I live out of district, and they were in need of volunteers, so I went over there. I am on duty crew because of it, but I do not mind at all.

It's firefighter, not fireman. Are you saying women can't do the job? We wouldn't want to offend anyone would we? Next time I'll report you to the PC police.
I just wish you were up here so I could recruit you. We're always looking for people.

He was correct in his usage of fireman. HE applied to become a fireman. If he was a woman, he could have applied to be a firewoman. Firefighter is just the term that encompasses everyone.
