I in my colleges EMT class and I am having trouble with Trauma Assessment. I am ok with Medical, as I go on shifts with my Campus EMS organization here and have gone on a few medical calls. Can you guys run through the steps of the Trauma Assessment for me and medical as well. i have my state exam in June and my class will end in about 5 weeks and I want to be sharps in these skills. I go to school in Massachusetts if that helps, as I do not know if the assessment guidelines vary from state to state. Thanks again!

I can't post a link because I don't have enough posts but in google, type in trauma assessment. The first link is a pdf file that my class uses. It's basically a step by step process. Hope it helps!

I think the important thing in assessment is to understand why you are doing things in the order presented on your assessment sheet. Why scene size up, why AVPU, why ABC's etc... When you understand why, then the thought process of following the sheet seems logical and feels natural.

If you want I'll go over them with you a few times outside of class or shifts if that would help! Just shoot me a text and we'll do some work on them.

Along those lines, also learn what's "normal" and as you do that, you'll begin to see what isn't. As you learn the "why" behind the non-normal stuff, you'll start being able to put together care plans that address those... and you may astound yourself by being able to articulate why you deviated from a particular protocol for "that"...

And then you'll start to realize that you need to be able to do more for your patients because you know that you don't know a lot of stuff. And then you're doomed to a life of continuously improving education... ;)

i'll let you in on the secret...

There is no difference at all.

The "trauma" and "medical" assessment are really the 2 components of a physical exam and history.

You need to do the same things and ask the same questions on all patients.

I suspect somebody somewhere thought that seperating them was a clever way to make a memory aid and add emphasis to certain aspects that are more useful to one over the other.

Those videos are rubbish anybody who practices like that should be banned.

All assessments are the same thing, you are just sometimes asking slightly different questions and looking for different pieces of information to establish a diagnosis

If we banned everyone who offered an OP something to begin working with then nobody would be here; not even you! :) Paramedic National Registry Trauma Assessment means a lotta people think that's the way it's done.

From the responses, including yours, you can see the OP is getting stuff to work with. That's part of what goes on here; providing approaches and experience so people have choices to consider. Banning -- even of those who practice a certain way -- is not what we're looking to do. Hopefully, you feel the same way.
