I am 35 and looking for a career change in the not to distant future. My local volunteer fire company is currently accepting applications and they will provide and pay for my emt-b training. I was thinking of volunteering and getting the experience for about 2 or 3 years then look to maybe do something in field full time at a paid fire station. Is my thinking correct? I was wondering if anyone else had done the same thing?

Skip the lengthy volunteer time if you already know you want to get paid. You can volunteer and do your commitment while also working full time as a Basic / Medic.

And if you DO eventually want to make a career out of EMS, consider getting your medic.

Like Linuss said get your medic.. Most fire dept's around here wont hire a basic. But thats just in my neck of the woods.
