I work at a large private company. Do you guys have any suggestions on how your agencies or companies secure and log narcotics? Also, what about keeping (and not losing) individual pulse oximeters with BLS gear? Just looking for ideas! Thank you!
Securing and accountability for narcotics is not something you can mess around with. You need a cradle to grave accountability system, operative IQ does a fantastic job of managing narcotics accountability. The narc box is also a fantastic tool for securing and maintaining accountability of your controlled substances.
There are several other systems for narcotics accountability, or you could just do it the old way with paper forms and signatures. However, if you have a diversion event, your logs will be scrutinized to the nth degree. Keeping them electronically and secure is the easiest way to make those investigations painless.
Our narcotics are stored in a Knox safe with each paramedic having an individual PIN. In the safe is a pouch with all the narcs, each kind of controlled substance is in a tamper evident bag with a serial number that gets logged into PSTrax each time a vial is removed. Not foolproof, but pretty good.
