Can you tell me if St. Louis has third service municipal EMT/Medics? Or are the only medics the city employs in the FD? I would like to move to St. Louis, but I am unfamiliar with how their municipal EMS services work. Thank you.

In Saint Louis County almost if not all are Medic/FF through a FD for 911 class. Not sure about the city. I know there is Abbot and a few other ambulance services around. If you have experience try to go for county, they pay $50-75k a year for their Medic/FF.

Thank you very much for the info. That helps.

As said, St. Louis City has its own FD EMS, and I would absolutely not go there at this time due to politics. To work in St. Louis County, you must go through the St. Louis County Fire Academy, which is a lot easier said than done. Most places outside of St. Louis County use third service EMS.

St. Louis City is in a huge financial crunch right now. They are talking about laying off a bunch of Fire/EMS employees fyi.

In the county almost all municipal departments use FF/Medics. St.Louis County has its own fire academy and you need their FF1/2 cert to be able to work anywhere in the county.

The metro area has several private services that employ Medics. Abbott(AMR), Gateway(Procarent), St. Charles County Ambulance District(SCCAD), and Christian North Hospital(run by BJC) all employ medics. A few have 911 contracts, but mostly they run IFTs. Almost all run Medic/EMT or EMT/EMT rigs.

There are also several services that are in the more rural areas. Valle, Meramec EMS, and JPAD to name a few.

EMS in St. Louis is highly saturated. Finding a job is really tough. Good luck:)
