I have less then 2 weeks until final examinations both theory and practical stations for EMT-I. I have a pretty good idea on what I should be studying, but I am still really stressed and I am not sure I know how to deal with it. Generally, I like to work out but as of late I am so focused on my book materials I don't want to do anything day or night. My nerves seem to also be acting up quite a bit too. I realize that going into EMS there are going to be times where I am tested physically, mentally and ethically, but I don't understand why I am so stressed for these exams. Does anyone else feel the same or have you have you?

Being stressed is normal, and in most cases it can be beneficial to you. After about 45min of studying I would always take a break and let the material "marinate" just remember excessively long cram sessions don't work very well in EMS. Also be sure to get a good night's sleep before test day.

Before my Basic testing, I got stressed, I think I was more stressed waiting the 6 weeks after the testing to find out whether or not I passed or not. Just keep calm, keep study sessions short (20 min - 40 min) then take a quick 5-10 min break. Get with your class mates and take a study group.

It's good that you're recognizing that you're under an elevated level of stress. I would highly suggest that you make time to do some stress-relieving activity... really make the time. Being under an elevated level of stress could very well lead you to make some really stupid mistakes simply because you're not able to process information well... all due to the extra stress you're under.

So, take some time for yourself every day just to de-stress and get away from the material. You might be surprised what you're able to recall after letting the material simmer in the background while doing something unrelated to your class.

Wait until paramedic if you plan on going to that stage. Have 3 finals this week, numerous skills testing, and I feel impending doom. lol

Thanks for the replies.

Akulahawk - I am trying to do that, but having a hard time with it, as I find myself wondering about treatments and medicine. I am looking into meditation, hopefully it works because my brain never shuts down…

teedubbyaw - I haven't thought that far ahead really yet. I would like to get through my exams and internship and master my BLS skills and ECG interpretation before going back for my EMT-P
