I might be getting a job with the local ambulance company and I wanted to be prepared for the wage discussion so I have a question or two.

(1) what's a good starting wage for entry level EMT with a year of experience?

(2) how does said wage get paid? Meaning is it hourly? Or if u work a 24 or 48 hour shift do u get time and a half?? Double time??

Thanks all (=

All of that is going to depend highly on the company. EMTs for California (from what I've seen and heard) make between $9-$15/hr.

Note: the only EMT job I have seen and heard about that is $15/hr was at a casino as a dual security/EMT position.

really really depends on the location and the job market around you.

HOWEVER, since your location says Norcal, I would say work for whatever you're offered.... yes, the market is that flooded. There is no "salary discussion" at most companies here... there is a "here is your offer, and this is what we are willing to pay you, take it or leave it, we have 15 other people all with open availability willing to work nights and weekends and whatever we want to pay them"

fwiw, i'm in SF and make $15 an hour, then time and a half and double time for OT... ot is really where the $$ is.

left i-banking to go into healthcare, so feeling a bit indignant sometimes at the 6-figure paycut :glare:

you can pm me if you want some more specifics on pay- maybe you have an offer at my company! :D
cheers,
bean
